STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team's impressive run through the 2014-15 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship tournament ended on Wednesday with a loss in the match play finals to Cal State Stanislaus. As runners-up, the Pioneers notched the program's best finish since joining the conference in 2009.
East Bay crested as a team at the perfect time, playing their three best rounds of the season over the last two days to advance to the medal round and defeat top-seeded Chico State in the semifinals.
They fell just short in the championship final against the Warriors, who repeated as tournament champions. Stanislaus was outstanding on Wednesday with four golfers shooting under par. Pioneer sophomore
Adam Stone picked up a victory for the second straight day, but Stanislaus had three wins and a halve in the other four matches to secure the title.
"I'm very proud of the way the team played this week," said head coach
Alan Sue. "All of the guys stepped up their games to get us to the championship match. The new format is really exciting."
Stone shot even-par 72 at Brookside Country Club, defeating Jahaan Nargussi by four strokes. He turned in 73-70-66-72 over four rounds, including a match play victory over CCAA Individual Medalist Alistair Docherty, in an outstanding overall performance.
A.J. Hebert was excellent in the final round as well, carding 69 (-3) in the anchor position. His score was matched by CSUS's Connor Day, producing half a point for each team. After back-to-back 73's in stroke play, the senior came up huge with consecutive rounds of 679 in medal play.
Freshman
Ignacio Ognian shot one of his best rounds of the season with a 74 (+2) on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough against Michael Mencaccy of Stanislaus, who fired the low round of the day with a 67 (-5).
Joel Keylor shot 76 (+4), falling short against Anthony Manguray's 70 (-2). The junior nonethleless finished off one of the best weeks of his career with rounds of 68-72-72-76.
Senior
Sam Lavelle was defeated by Tyler Leeworthy, who shot three-under 69. Lavelle carded a 78 (+6) to wrap up the conference championships for the Pioneers.
"Even though we lost, the team has been improving each week," added Sue. "It's an amazing accomplishment to finish second in the CCAA with all of the talent at this tournament. We will be ready for the regional championship."
2014-15 East Bay men's golf is just the second Pioneer squad to reach the CCAA championship finals in any sport, joining the 2014-15 women's basketball team.
The Pioneers are playing their best golf of the season heading into the 2015 NCAA Division II West Regionals, which they're hosting at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in the city of Vallejo on May 4-6.
