East Bay Completes Season Sweep of Stanislaus, 74-68

TURLOCK, Calif. – Stephanie Lopez and Tori Breshers combined for 42 points on 16-of-23 shooting from the floor as Cal State East Bay upended Cal State Stanislaus 74-68 on the road Friday night. Lopez broke the program's single season scoring record and became the first Pioneer to score 500 points in one season.

"Those two carried us again tonight. Tori had key late game baskets and Steph with late game free throws," praised East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb.

Friday's outcome was in doubt until the final two minutes when Alyssa Palma knocked down a timely 3-pointer and Lopez scored the team's final six points while going 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Lopez finished with 24 points to lead all players and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe.

"We are very fortunate to earn a win. Stanislaus made us play well outside of our comfort zone," said Barcomb.

Cal State Stanislaus (8-17, 6-15 CCAA) battled from behind throughout most of the night, but responded with scoring runs to keep pace with the visiting Pioneers. The Warriors entered Friday leading the league in made 3-pointers and added 11 more to their total to stay within comeback range.

Cassidy Curry-Sanders scored the first seven points of 9-0 run to close out the first half and pull the host Warriors to within one point of Cal State East Bay. She was one of six different Warriors to knock down a combined seven first half threes, and finished with 12 points.

Breshers was flawless shooting in the first half going 6-for-6 and matched Lopez's 12-point effort over the first 20 minutes. Sharissa Estremera gave the Pioneers a lift off the bench knocking down a pair of 3-pointers and scored all eight of her points in the opening period.

The team's traded leads until Laci Effenberger broke a 48-48 tie near the 12 minute mark with a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 scoring run. Baskets from Remy Puou and Micah Walker capped off the stretch, but again the Warriors immediately responded with seven unanswered points to pull even.

In crunch time the Pioneers went on one final scoring run with the Warriors out of answers. Breshers and Palma scored nine points to turn a slim one point cushion into a 68-61 lead with two minutes remaining. Lopez's final field goal made it a nine point edge with a minute to go and went on to secure the win at the foul line.

Alysa Valentine led CSUS with 16 points and six assists in 36 minutes. Riley Holladay finished with 14 points and one rebound shy of completing her double-double. She was one of five different Warriors to drain two 3-pointers in the loss.

Lopez broke the program's 32-year old single season scoring record of 483 points set by Shawn Spangler with a first half 3-pointer. She finished Friday with 503 points and is scoring 18.6 points per game. Her average point production would also eclipse the school record of 18.3 held by Robyn Crispi (1990-91) and Leah Thornton (2004-05).

CSUEB completed the season sweep of Cal State Stanislaus with tonight's road win and its 58-55 triumph in Hayward back on Jan. 24. The Pioneers have now won three straight and eight of the past nine meetings with the Warriors.

The program's 17 wins this season are the most since the 2005-06 campaign when the team finished 18-9. Cal State East Bay (17-10, 12-9 CCAA) will look to match that mark on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they close out the regular season at Chico State (10-15, 7-14 CCAA). The Wildcats defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 69-66 on Friday night.
