CHICO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay completed its regular season schedule with a 58-45 road win over Chico State on Saturday night at Art Acker Gymnasium. The Pioneers will enter the postseason on a positive note as they face Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships inside Stockton Arena.
The East Bay offense struggled to get much scoring over the opening 10 minutes as host Chico State (10-16, 7-15 CCAA) built a 20-7 lead. A
Remy Puou close range bucket at the 14:21 mark was the only Pioneer field goal as the midway point of the first half ticked away.
"We dug ourselves a big hole. Luckily the final five minutes before halftime we decided to defend and got back in the game," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb.
Tori Breshers was the main catalyst during the stretch which saw East Bay cut a 13-point deficit to only two heading into halftime. Breshers connected on 4-of-5 shots and scored eight of the team's final 13 points of the first period.
East Bay stayed hot out of halftime extending that scoring run to 21-2 over the course of both halves. The Pioneers held the Wildcats to only two points over that 10-plus minute stretch and to just 20 points over the final 25 minutes of regulation.
"Our second half defense was much improved and we rebounded by committee. Our defense got our offense going in the second half," Barcomb praised of her squad.
Breshers led the rebounding committee and all players on Saturday with 11 boards and 18 points. She collected her sixth double-double of the year and third over the past four contests.
East Bay dominated the glass outrebounding Chico State 43-26 overall, and in turn outscored the Wildcats 34-16 in the paint. The Pioneers controlled the second half action defensively by holding the Wildcats to 6-of-24 (.250) shooting from the floor and did not allow a single player to score in double figures.
Hannah Womack led Chico State with nine points and six assists. Haley Cremen led the Wildcat bench with eight points in 19 minutes.
East Bay's
Stephanie Lopez ended the night with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Lopez and Breshers fired off 30 of the team's 55 shots, and accounted for 30 of the team's 58 points.
Senior
Micah Walker added nine points, three assists, and three steals in the win. On Thursday, she will become the first player in program history to compete in four CCAA Championship tournaments.
Walker,
Shannon Bland, and
Laci Effenberger tied for the team-high with three assists each. The trio combined to score 23 points on only 17 shots from the field.
It is the first time in five trips Cal State East Bay has managed to win both games of its back-to-back weekend matchups against Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State. The Pioneers have now won four straight over the Wildcats after sweeping the season series in back-to-back year.
Cal State East Bay (18-10, 13-9 CCAA) is the No. 6 seed for the upcoming CCAA Championships which begins on Thursday, March 5. CSUEB will take on No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona (19-7, 17-5 CCAA) at 2:35 p.m.
