SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay senior
A.J. Hebert finished as runner-up at the 2015 Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino at the par-70 Arrowhead Country Club. Hebert shot 65 (-5) in Tuesday's final round, the lowest tournament score by a Pioneer golfer since East Bay joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2009.
The Pleasanton native finished with a three-round total of 211 (+1), tied for second place with Dixie State's Kenny You and three strokes behind the individual medalist, Cal Baptist's Kavan Eubank (-2). Hebert's third round consisted of six birdies and a bogey, and he was four under par on the front nine.
Cal State East Bay placed 12th overall in the 15-team event with a total score of 899 (+59). They were excellent collectively in the first round before stumbling on Monday afternoon. But the Pioneers bounced back with a standout performance in Tuesday's final round, matching Chico State for the lowest total of the day at 291 (+11).Â
The Wildcats captured the team championship at +24. East Bay finished behind the other six CCAA squads for the week, but they bested all of them on Tuesday.Â
"A.J. stepped up today when the team really needed it," said head coach
Alan Sue. "We talked about everyone going low today and trying to gain as much ground as possible. A.J. and Adam came through for us."
Adam Stone carded his second under-par round of the tournament with a 69 (-1) in the final 18 holes. The sophomore ended up tied for 22nd in the overall field of 80 golfers with a total of 221 (+11).Â
Junior
Barrett Taylor also returned to form after a tough second round, shooting 78 (+8) on Tuesday for East Bay's third team score. He finished in 77th place with a total of 246 (+36).
The fourth team score was turned in by senior
Sam Lavelle, who fired a 79 (+9) and ended up in a tie for 64th place at 237 (+27) overall.
Junior
Joel Keylor rounded out CSUEB's day with a final-round 81 (+11), but he was the team's third-highest finisher for the week, taking 56th place at 233 (+23).
With the spring season underway, the Pioneers now have a few weeks off before returning to Southern California to compete in the UC San Diego SoCal Intercollegiate, which begins on Monday, Mar. 23.
