CARSON, Calif. – Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills entered Saturday with the two longest active winning streaks in the league. The Pioneers saw theirs end at four dropping a 75-63 decision inside the Torodome to the current co-leader of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Remy Puou,
Micah Walker, and
Tori Breshers combined to give East Bay an 11-2 lead just over four minutes after the opening tip. Less than five minutes later it was back to even as the host Toros scored nine unanswered points.
"We started off the first five minutes playing at a high level. Cal State Dominguez Hills elevated their intensity and we didn't match it," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb.
A pair of Breshers baskets were the only Pioneer made field goals over the final nine minutes of the first half. Meanwhile the Toros closed the period on a 23-10 run and extended its lead to first half high 14 points with a final second basket.
Stephanie Lopez led all players with 27 points and six assists. Despite dropping 17 points and four dimes in the second half, the Pioneers never pulled any closer than eight points and trailed by as many as 20 in the second half. Lopez finished 13-of-16 from the free throw line tonight, and her 135 makes this season is four shy of the single season program record set more than a decade ago.
Lopez went shot-for-shot with Breanne Garcia who led CSUDH with 26 points and four assists. She was one of four Toro starters to score in double figures.
The Toros shot better than 52 percent from the field as a team. Tayler Champion went 4-for-6, including 3-of-5 from three for 13 points. Talia Rayford connected on 4-of-6 shots for her 13, and Monay Lee finished with 11 points as Cal State Dominguez Hills extended its active winning streak to eight games.
"We couldn't get stops in the half court and had letdowns on the defensive end," Coach Barcomb added. "We played more like East Bay in the second half, but just played even with them and couldn't make a dent in their lead."
Breshers finished with 14 points and an East Bay best seven rebounds. Puou and Walker finished with eight points apiece in the loss.
