Pioneers Punch Postseason Ticket with Overtime Win over Coyotes

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's basketball will be heading to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Postseason Tournament for the fourth straight year following Friday night's 74-66 overtime victory over Cal State San Bernardino inside Pioneer Gymnasium.

"This was a team win and there were so many little things that went into the end result. When everyone does their part, that is when we play our best basketball," said East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb.

The leading role in tonight's performance goes to senior guard Stephanie Lopez. She poured in 29 points and was a flawless 13-of-13 at the free throw line. Arguably her most important makes tied the game with 33 seconds remaining in regulation.

"We had a trio of scorers tonight with Remy Puou, Tori Breshers and Stephanie leading the way with a terrific performance tonight. The poise of Steph tonight created a calmness and allowed us to keep our composure when San Bernardino made that great run at us late in the game," praised Barcomb.

Cal State San Bernardino (17-6, 13-6 CCAA) held possession and ran the final seconds of regulation down with the hopes of scoring the game-winning basket. The Pioneers forced a shot clock violation on the Coyotes with less than a second remaining as the team's headed into overtime.

Lopez took over in crunch time scoring six points and dishing out two assists in the overtime frame. It capped off a performance with team-highs of 41 minutes played, 29 points, seven assists, and three steals.

While Lopez's numbers will grab headlines it was the effort of everyone which secured the win. Point guard Shannon Bland set the tone early with her aggressiveness on the boards. She was one of three different Pioneers to grab 11 rebounds, and as a collective unit outrebounded the Coyotes 49-36.

"The job that Shannon, Micah Walker, and Tori did on the glass tonight was outstanding. They were relentless and we needed every single rebound they were able to grab," Barcomb complimented.

Walker and Bland posted career-highs in rebounds with 11 each. Breshers finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards. She connected on 8-of-14 shots and played a large role in holding CSUSB to under 40 percent shooting on the night.

Alexcia Mack shouldered much of the offensive load for the visiting side leading them with 24 points in 42 minutes of floor time. She was one of six Coyotes to play 30-plus minutes on the front end of a back-to-back road trip.

"Mack was carrying her team. She is such a dynamic player and we just had to do what we could to force her into tough shots and try and go grab the defensive rebound," said Barcomb on trying to deal with Mack.

It was a meaningful night for many reasons. It was Cal State East Bay's "Think Pink" night, Coach Barcomb was recognized in front of the home crowd for her 300th career win, and the team punched its ticket into the CCAA Tournament.

"I told the team prior to the game this was my favorite time of the season; we honor Kay Yow, our seniors (on Saturday) and we get to battle for an opportunity to earn a tournament spot and play in postseason. We responded well tonight," said Barcomb.

Cal State East Bay (16-9, 11-8 CCAA) will host No. 22 ranked Humboldt State (21-3, 17-2 CCAA) on Saturday, Feb. 21, in the final home game of the 2014-15 season. Seniors Alyssa Palma, Sharissa Estremera, Lopez, and Walker will be recognized prior to the start of tomorrow's game.
