Video LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb enters the weekend with 299 career wins between her time with the Pioneers and 12 years at Puget Sound. The Pioneers will have two chances on the road this weekend to make it 300 when they face Cal State L.A. on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
Cal State East Bay took sole possession of sixth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings following back-to-back home wins against Sonoma State and San Francisco State over Homecoming Weekend. The Pioneers jumped past Cal State L.A. which suffered home losses to Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles currently hold the tiebreaking edge over the Pioneers following their 71-63 road win in Hayward back on Jan. 10. However an East Bay victory would avenge the earlier result, put them two games clear of CSULA, and for the time being give CSUEB the tiebreaker following their recent road win over Cal Poly Pomona.
"It would be huge for our team morale and confidence to get that win (in L.A.) as we head into the home stretch of our conference schedule," said Assistant Coach
Kelsie Kruger. "We need to take care of what we can control. There isn't one game where we can slip up."
The importance of the upcoming road contests goes beyond the league playoff picture and notching the first road win over either of its weekend opponents. Coach Barcomb is on the verge of winning her 300th game as a NCAA head coach.
"Coach Barcomb has done a great job of turning around the program from what it was when she arrived. She has changed the culture and made East Bay somewhere people want to be and have that feeling of family," said current Assistant Coach and former East Bay women's basketball student-athlete
Emily Schaefer.
Barcomb amassed a 237-87 record during her time at Puget Sound. She led the Loggers to 11 winning seasons and a better than .700 winning percentage in Northwest Conference (NWC) play. In her final season at UPS the team finished 24-5, 14-2 NWC. That same year the Pioneers finished 2-25, 2-20 CCAA.
CSUEB went 4-22, 4-18 CCAA in her first season and took off soon thereafter with win totals of 12, 16, and 16 the following three years. Cal State East Bay reached the CCAA Postseason Tournament the past three seasons and can give itself a big boost to make it four straight this weekend.
Cal State East Bay will need to do something it has not done since joining the CCAA in 2009-10 if Barcomb is to get win No. 300; earn a road win over CSULA or CSUDH. Despite their combined 0-11 road record against the two upcoming opponents, eight of those defeats have been by less than 10 points.
Cal State L.A. has dominated the series as of late winning four straight and eight of the past nine meetings. The Pioneers have not won at the Eagles Nest in six tries, with four of the six losses suffered by nine points or fewer.
Cal State Dominguez Hills has won three straight over the Pioneers with victories in the Torodome, at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, and in Pioneer Gym. The Toros are 5-0 on their home floor against the Pioneers with two of the last four victories by the slimmest of margins.
Barcomb picked up career win No. 299 exactly 11 years later to the day she notched career win No. 100, when Puget Sound defeated Pacific (Ore.) on Feb. 7, 2004. Win No. 200 came less than five years later with a 48-38 road win over Evergreen State on Dec. 10, 2008.
