SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule in impressive fashion, cruising to a 76-55 win on the road at Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday evening.
The Pioneers (5-2, 1-0 CCAA) went on as huge run in the second quarter, out-scoring the Coyotes 21-6 to take a 16-point lead into halftime. They kept the pressure on in the second half, stretching the lead past 20 to erase any hopes the home team had for a late comeback.Â
"It's great to kick off CCAA play on the road and come out with a win," said head coach
Suzy Barcomb. "We shared the ball and the responsibility to score with everyone tonight -- we become more difficult to guard when we involve everyone."Â
One game after becoming the fourth Pioneer in program history to score 1,000 career points, senior
Tori Breshers poured in 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting at CSUSB to lead all scorers. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end.Â
Senior
Ashleigh Anderson posted 12 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers, going 5-for-9 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range.Â
"Tori continued her all-around solid play with another good night, and Ash was great off the bench on both ends of the floor," Barcomb commented.
As a team, the Pioneers shot 45.5 percent from the field. They struggled from long distance (6-for-19), but scored 42 points in the paint and did a good job taking care of the ball with just seven turnovers all night. Defensively, East Bay held San Bernardino to just 32.7 percent form the floor, and they out-rebounded the Coyotes 40 to 31.
Senior
Laci Effenberger didn't quite have the shooting tough that netted her a program-record seven three-pointers on Saturday, but she nonetheless posted her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 assists. She's the first East Bay player to rack up double-digit assists since the 2013-14 season.
Backcourt partner
Shannon Bland led the team with 37 minutes played and filled up the scoresheet with seven points, four rebounds, and three steals. Fellow senior
Madison Craig notched nine points and six boards, going 3-for-5 from the floor.Â
Tonight marks the first win for the Pioneers at Coussoulis Arena since the 2012-13 season, and the team avenges a two-point loss to the Coyotes a year ago.Â
Next up, East Bay returns to Hayward this weekend for the CCAA home opener on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against Chico State.
