MONMOUTH, Ore. -- The Cal State East Bay women's cross country team closed out the 2015 season on Saturday morning against a huge field of teams at the NCAA Division II West Regionals, hosted by Western Oregon University at Ash Creek Preserve.Â
The Pioneers turned in a solid performance, placing 24th out of 31 teams representing the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), and Pacific West Conference. CCAA rival Chico State won the team championship.
"The women really impressed me," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "There's not a person on that team who hasn't battled an injury this year. We had two runners come back from stress fractures and converted two athletes from other sports, and we still beat four teams today. It was the toughest effort I've seen a group give."Â
Senior
Imani Heath was East Bay's top finisher in her final career cross country race. She placed 65th in the field of 192 runners with a 6k time of 22:34.89. Fellow senior
Oddessy Tapia was next for the Pioneers, taking 132nd place in 23:42.43.
The next three Pioneers all finished close together in a group. Junior
Kandace Compton (24:21.15) placed 154th, junior
Sarah Perrin (24:29.83) took 156th, and senior
Kelsey Lamb (24:34.32) finished in 159th.
Former All-American swimmer
Alyssa Tenney finished off an impressive season as a fifth-year senior for cross country, taking 171st place in 25:19.71. Junior
Vanessa Mares rounded out East Bay's day with a 182nd place finish, crossing the finish line in 26:45.29.
