MONMOUTH, Ore. -- The Cal State East Bay men's cross country team finished the 2015 season in impressive fashion on Saturday morning in cold, rainy conditions at the NCAA Division II West Regionals, hosted by Western Oregon University at Ash Creek Preserve.Â
The Pioneers placed 23rd in a huge field of teams representing the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), and Pacific West Conference. Alaska Anchorage captured the team championships, followed by CCAA squads Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona in second and third to advance to NCAA National Championships.Â
Freshman
Israel Sotelo was East Bay's top finisher once again. He placed 114th with a time of 32:54.35, making him the first Pioneer to run a 10k race in under 33 minutes since the program re-joined Division II.
"I'm really proud of our men," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "Israel broke 33 minutes, which is a first for the program this century. We also finally managed to break up Stanislaus State's pack."Â
Sophomore
Zach Kanlong was next for the Pioneers, finishing 144th with a time of 34:06.21 in his first career 10k. He was followed by a trip of CSUEB runners in close succession. Freshman
Jesus Leon (34:27.20) took 152nd, junior
Kyle Fetter (34:45.74) placed 155th, and freshman
Cameron Olson (34:49.17) finished 156th, all breaking the 35-minute mark.
Junior
Noah Siegel notched a 160th place finish with a time of 35:47.24, and senior
Orlando Ramirez crossed the finish line in 36:19.51 in 162nd place to close out the day for East Bay.
"Four of our guys ran under 35 minutes after just one did it at last year's Regionals," Nicolosi added. "They have improved so much, it's honestly nothing short of amazing. Big things are in store for us."
