SAN FRANCISCO -- In the final tune-up before the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships, the Cal State East Bay women's cross country team competed on Friday at the San Francisco State Invitational in Golden Gate Park.
"We held some of our best women out so they would be ready for conference, which gave other runners an opportunity to really step up today," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi."
Vanessa Mares led the way for the Pioneers, finishing 131st with a time of 25:04.9 on the same 6k course that will serve as the site of the CCAA championships.Â
Melissa Bell clocked in at 25:28.1 to take 145th place, and she was followed closely by
Alyssa Tenney. The senior's time of 25:37.0 put her in 153rd place overall.
Leslie Diaz rounded out East Bay's day with a time of 26:43.2 to finish in 174th place finish in the field of 232 runners.
"Vanessa ran two minutes faster than she did at Stanford," added Nicolosi. "Alyssa improved by a minute and gained some much-needed cross country experience. We left today feeling like we have 8-9 athletes who could have a huge day on this course in two weeks."
The Pioneer will now prepare for the 2015 CCAA Championships on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Golden Gate Park.Â
