HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team was defeated in straight sets on Tuesday night in the annual rivalry matchup with San Francisco State (21-25, 18-25, 16-25).
The Gators out-hit the Pioneers .218 to .123 for the night and took advantage of six aces at the service line. SF State also got an outstanding performance form Jaclyn Clark, who led all players with 14 kills and made zero attack errors.
The visitors got off to a red-hot start, jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the first set. But the Pioners refused to quit. They won eight of the next nine points to pull within six, and then they made a five-point scoring run late to make it 23-20. Unfortunately, their comeback fell short at the Gators hun on for a four-point win.
The next two frames were both much closer, but East Bay's struggles on the attack prevented them from finishing off a set. The Pioneers hung tough, but in both cases, SF State pulled away at the end to secure the victories.
Sophomore
Kiani Rayford led the team with seven kills, while freshmen middles
Deja Thompson and
Kathy McKiernan both posted six kills ands three blocks.
Kiki Leuteneker and
Michaela Gardner notched four kills apiece, and setter
Veronica Fabiano totaled 26 assists to go along with four kills of her own.
Senior libero
Angie Maina continued to rack up the digs, tallying 25 in the three sets to add to her conference-leading total.
Darlene Lee added 12 scoops and a pair of kills.
Next up, the Pioneers (3-13, 1-7 CCAA) travel south for a pair of tough road matches as they look to snap a five-match losing streak. The team visits UC San Diego on Oct. 9, followed by nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 10, with both set to start at 7 p.m.
