Humboldt Uses Late Rallies to Pull off Sweep

ARCATA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in straight sets on the road at Humboldt State on Thursday night, dropping a pair of heartbreaking frames in extra points (15-25, 24-26, 24-26).

After the Jacks hit .440 as a team and ran away with game one, the match was extremely tight the rest of the way. In the second set, the lead traded back and forth eight times as the Pioneers found success on the attack. They had set point with a 24-23 lead, but the Jacks rallied to win three straight points and steal a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Pioneers played even better in the third game, leading by as many as five and holding an advantage nearly the entire set. But Humboldt rallied to tie the score, and then back-to-back kills by Hayden Simone have the home team its first lead at 24-23. Kathy McKiernan scored a kill to even the score back up, but the Jacks won the final two points on kills to secure the sweep.

East Bay hit .244 and .297 in the last two frames, and they finished the match at a solid .229 overall. But despite eight blocks by the Pioneer defense, Humboldt managed to hit an impressive .313 for the night, led by 17 kills from Simone.

Deja Thompson led the Pioneers with nine kills, posting a .533 attack percentage and totaling four blocks. McKiernan also had four blocks and added three kills without and error. And fellow freshman Julie Navarro added five kills and a team-best five total blocks.

Michaela Gardner notched eight kills and took a team-high 24 attempts. Kiki Leuteneker had four digs and a pair of while, while Kiani Rayford tallied three kills and three scoops.

Senior libero Angie Maina led all players with 20 digs and three service aces. Setter Kylie Fraga totaled 28 assists to go along with five kills, an ace, and four digs.

East Bay's road trip continues this weekend when the Pioneer visit Sonoma State for a tough Halloween showdown with the first-place Seawolves, currently ranked #24 nationally.
