East Bay Comes up Short against #24 Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell on the road Saturday night to first-place Sonoma State, the 24th-ranked team in the nation, who won their 14th straight match (15-25, 16-25, 23-25).

The Seawolves hit .417 in improving their overall record to 18-3, racking up 47 kills with just eight attack errors. The Pioneers posted a solid .245 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough at they fall to 4-20 overall.

Sonoma ran away with the first two sets behind Lexi Reddic with 11 kills 14 and All-American Caylie Seitz, who led all players with 14 kills.

Game three was tight, as the team traded the lead back and forth several times. A kill by Michaela Gardner and a Seawolf attack error tied the score at 23-23 late in the frame, but Sonoma scored a kill to take the lead, then won the match on a service ace.

Gardner finished with 10 kills to lead the Pioneers and made just two attack errors. Kiki Leuteneker added eight kills, and Kiani Rayford scored five kills on a team-best .364 attack percentage.

In the middle, Deja Thompson hit .286 with seven kills and paced the squad with three block assists.

Senior libero Angie Maina led all players with 15 digs, while sophomore Brandi Brucato tallied seven scoops and the team's only two service aces.

Setter Kylie Fraga posted 31 assists and four digs, facilitating East Bay's offense against the talented Seawolf squad.

The Pioneers return home next weekend for three straight matches at Pioneer Gym. On Friday, Nov. 6, they host rival Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m.
