HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Cal State L.A. at Pioneer Gym on Friday night (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25). After falling behind 0-2, the Pioneers rallied to win the third set, but couldn't complete the comeback in front of their home fans.
It's the fourth straight loss for East Bay as the team falls to 3-12 on the season and 1-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Golden Eagles bounce back from a loss at SF State on Friday to improve to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA.
The Pioneers actually out-hit CSULA .248 to .215 for the night as the teams played a match that was statistically extremely even. The Golden Eagles totaled just one more point (71 to 70), one more kill (57 to 56), and one more assist (53 to 52) than the Pioneers, and the squads were even in blocks (8 to 8). But despite an efficient performance on the attack, East Bay hurt themselves with 11 errors at the service line.
All four sets were tight, as neither team held a lead of more than five points for the entirety of the match. But with the exception of game three, the Pioneers couldn't manage to sustain enough momentum to make the scoring runs they needed to rally at the end of sets.
Kiki Leuteneker once again finished as East Bay's leading attacker, notching her third straight double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs while hitting .286 for the match.
Fellow freshman
Deja Thompson posted a .304 attack percentage with 10 kills and a team-high four total blocks.
Kathy McKiernan tallied four blocks as well, to go along with eight kills on 16 attempts for a .313 hitting percentage.
One night after setting the program record for digs in a match (43), junior
Darlene Lee posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 scoops. Senior libero
Angie Maina added to her conference-leading dig total with 26 to lead all players on this night.
Sophomores
Kylie Fraga and
Veronica Fabiano split the setting duties and finished with 26 and 21 assists, respectively. Fabiano also added seven digs and a team-best three service aces.
Sophomore
Michaela Gardner was effective on the attack, hitting .300 with nine kills for the Pioneers, while freshman southpaw
Julie Navarro added three kills and three block assists.
Cal State L.A.'s Iona Lofrano, who entered the match as the leading scorer in the CCAA, paced all players with 18 kills for the night.
Next up, the Pioneers will look to snap their skid on Tuesday, Oct 6, when they hosted local rival San Francisco State for a 7 p.m. midweek match.
