SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay women's cross country team finished in ninth place at the 2015 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships on Sunday morning.
The Pioneers scored 258 points on the 6k course at Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadows, finishing ahead of both Cal State L.A. and Sonoma State. Chico State, ranked No. 4 in the nation, captured the team championship for the eighth straight year.Â
Imani Heath was the top runner for the Pioneers for the second straight season at conference championships. She placed 41st overall in the field of 113 athletes with a time of 22:35.9.
Fellow senior
Oddessy Tapia was next, crossing the finish line in 22:59.1 to take 57th place.
Junior
Kandace Compton turned in a time of 23:56.7 in her first league championship race to place 83rd. Senior
Kelsey Lamb was close behind in 89th place. The former Pioneer soccer player had her best performance of the fall, finishing in 24:25.2.
Freshman
Melissa Bell finished strong, making up ground over the second half of the course to place 92nd with a time of 24:38.7. She was followed closely by senior
Vanessa Mares (24:55.1) in 95th place, junior
Sarah Perrin (25:11.4) in 97th, and senior
Alyssa Tenney (25:18.1), a former All-American swimmer for Cal State East Bay, in 100th.
Senior
Celina Vera placed 107th with an inspired effort, notching a time of 26:06.6 while competing in her first meet of the fall. Freshman
Leslie Diaz rounded out the team's morning with a 113th place finish in 27:17.8.
The season continues for the Pioneers in two weeks, when they travel to Monmouth, Ore. for the NCAA Division II West Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 7.
