Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Cal State East Bay was again on the wrong end of an overtime result dropping a 3-2 decision to San Francisco State at Cox Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Adrian Maldonado and
Michael Tieku scored go-ahead goals, but SFSU's Kevin Johnson scored the deciding goal only 13 seconds into overtime.
"We scored two good goals today off restarts. That was something we focused on improving following Friday's game," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "We needed to do a better job of building on our momentum after we took the lead each time."
Cal State East Bay earned five corner kicks in the first half.
Rica Guerra served in the fourth of five in the period and found Maldonado within the 6-yard box. The senior defender finished for his first career goal in 27 games with the Pioneers to open the scoring.
East Bay goalkeeper
Steven Morgan started for the first time this season and suppressed the San Francisco State (5-1-2, 1-1-0 CCAA) offense through 32 minutes. A 15-yard strike from Emmanuel Serrano equalized the match less than six minutes after the Pioneers took the lead.
"Steven performed well today and did a good job stepping us for his teammates," praised Cumbo. Morgan finished with a career-high seven saves in the defeat.
The score remained tied heading into the final five minutes of regulation when the Pioneers took advantage of a Gator miscue. Tieku gained possession after a poor SFSU clearance and put the visiting side ahead in the 85th minute with his second goal of the season.
CSUEB was able to score two goals on S.F. State netminder Daniel Boyer. Heading into Sunday's match, the Gator goalkeeper had conceded only two scores in 560 minutes all season for a 0.32 goals against average.
As the Pioneers poured on the pressure with corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, the Gators did the same in the second half with seven of their own. The final set piece came in the 87th minute as Nathan Fernandez's service found Jakob Velega less than two minutes after falling behind a second time.
The second straight overtime game for both teams ended swiftly as the Gators scored within the opening seconds of extra time. Johnson scored his second goal of the season on a breakaway from 10 yards out for the game-winner.
"I think our team was a bit fatigued having played so late on Friday night, and then having to turn around and play on the road this morning," said Cumbo. "We'll take what we need to from our experiences this weekend to make us stronger as we move forward."
San Francisco State snaps a 4-match losing skid to Cal State East Bay with Sunday's result. Despite the loss, the Pioneers are the first team to score multiple goals against the Gators this season.
Cal State East Bay (3-4-1, 0-2-0 CCAA) will host Sonoma State (6-3-0, 1-1-0 CCAA) on Friday, Oct. 3.
