Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay surrendered three second half goals in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener to Humboldt State dropping a 3-2 decision inside Pioneer Stadium on Friday night.
Megan Ravenscroft and
Ariana Gordon each scored, but HSU's Taylor McMillin put away the deciding goal in the 80th minute.
The team's leading scorer got started early as throw-in specialist
Sara Yamasaki hurled it inside the 18-yard box of Humboldt State (6-1-0, 1-0-0 CCAA). From inside the penalty area, teammate
Mindy Castro redirected it towards goal, and Ravenscroft finished it uncontested from two yards out in the fifth minute.
The Pioneer advantage would hold until just past the hour mark as the Jacks struck for two quick goals. Colette Behen and Erica McMullen placed a pair of long range strikes at the 62:11 and 64:11 marks, respectively.
Cal State East Bay responded within 30 seconds to halt the Jacks momentum and net the equalizer. Ravenscroft completed her run down the right side of the pitch placing the ball off the crossbar from a tough angle outside of the 18-yard box. Gordon beat her defender and the keeper going for the rebound and fired home her fourth goal of the season from six yards out.
In seven previous meetings since joining the CCAA in 2009, Cal State East Bay had dominated the series posting a 6-0-1 record. The unbeaten streak ended at seven after HSU's McMillin finished off a cross from teammate Erica McMullen in the 80th minute.
East Bay Goalkeeper
Briana Scholtens earned her first start of the season and made one save. It was her first appearance since suffering a major leg injury against Cal State Stanislaus in the team's home finale last season. HSU goalkeeper Amber Woolcock made two saves in the victory.
Cal State East Bay (3-3-2, 0-1-0 CCAA) will be on the road Sunday, Sept. 28, versus San Francisco State (5-2-0, 0-1-0 CCAA). The Gators fell to nationally ranked No. 3 Cal State Stanislaus, 1-0.
