GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team shot seven-under-par in Tuesday's final round to pass eight teams and finish the 2014 Mustang Intercollegiate in 10th place. Three Pioneers were under par in the third round, leading the team to a score of 281 (-7), which was the second-lowest total at Palm Valley Golf Club today and the lowest single round the Pioneers have carded this season.
East Bay finished the tournament at 883 (+19), which is their best three-round total of the 2013-14 season by 24 strokes. The host Western New Mexico took first place in the 20-team event at -11. CCAA squads Cal State Stanislaus (-3), Cal State Monterey Bay (-1), and Sonoma State (+3) rounded out the top four. The Pioneers finished ahead of conference rivals UC San Diego (+25) and Cal State San Bernardino (+26).
Junior
A.J. Hebert fired his lowest round of the season and tied for the lowest round of the entire Mustang Intercollegiate with a 67 (-5) on Tuesday. The lefty ended up at 214 (-2), finishing in 13th place out of 100 golfers. This marks the first time in Hebert's collegiate career that he's finished under par in a tournament.
Freshman
Adam Stone carded a 70 (-2) in the third round to finish the week even at 216 (E) and in a tie for 16th place individually. Senior
Zain Pervez shot 76 (+4) to close out the tournament, putting him in a tie for 69th at 227 (+11).
Sophomore
Joel Keylor shaved nine strokes off his second-round total and carded a 70 (-2) in the final 18 holes. He finished tied for 72nd place at 229 (+13).
Elliot Busichio also fired his best round of the week on Tuesday, turning in a 74 (+2). The senior's three-round total of 234 (+18) put him in 95th place.
The CSUEB men have one tournament remaining before the CCAA Championships. Next week, they travel to Turlock to compete in the 41st annual Harry Stanislaus Invitational.
