Standings:
2014 CCAA SoftballCal St. Stanislaus 3, Cal St. East Bay 2 – FThe series opener featured a pitcher's duel between East Bay's Emily Perlich (11-13) and Stanislaus' Karina Callazo (6-5). Each tossed one-hitters through the first six innings with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning from Ali Cerminara the lone Pioneer hit. An error aided run in the fifth gave the home side a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh.
The first two Warriors reached base in the seventh before a Perlich strikeout and a diving catch in center field by
Lauren Vestal put the Pioneers one out away from victory. Following a four pitch walk to load the bases, Cal State Stanislaus' (15-34, 8-22 CCAA) Kristan Burns drove the first pitch offering into the left field corner to clear the bases and give her squad a 3-2 lead.
Callazo preserved her one-hitter by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for the win. She improved to 4-1 with a sub-two ERA over her past five starts and is the second different Warrior pitcher to one-hit the Pioneers this season.
Stanislaus snapped its own 10-game CCAA road losing streak and Cal State East Bay's nine-game home win streak. The Warriors extended their winning streak over the Pioneers to six in the opener and took control early in game two to make it seven straight.
Cal St. Stanislaus 14, Cal St. East Bay 6 – F/6 Inn.After both teams combined for four base hits in the opener, the Warriors doubled that total with eight in the opening frame. When the dust settled Cal State Stanislaus had built a 9-0 highlighted by a streak of six straight plate appearances that drove in at least one run.
Cierrah Mullins went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the first inning and finished 3-for-5 in the game. Leadoff batter Cassidy Duke went 4-for-4 with an RBI and scored all four times she reached base. All 11 Warrior batters collected at least one run batted in, led by a pair from Melissa Robles, Mullins, and Burns. Cal State Stanislaus' season-high 14 runs comes after not scoring double figures in a single game since late February.
Kelsey LaVaute hit homers in back-to-back at bats with a solo effort in the fourth inning and a 3-run blast in the fifth. She leads the Pioneers with 11 long balls and is the fourth Pioneer during the CCAA era to hit 10 or more in a single season.
LaVaute, Cerminara, and Vestal combined to hit 8-for-18 (.444) and drive in all eight of the team's runs on Friday. The rest of the Pioneer batters hit just 2-for-31 (.064).
CSUS pitcher Natalie Rendon (5-15) allowed three runs over five innings and struck out two batters in the win. East Bay's
Kelsey Cairns (4-8) lasted only 0.1 innings allowing seven runs. Freshman teammate Olivia Aragon recorded her longest outing of the season going 4.2 innings while striking out a season-high three batters.
Cal State East Bay (22-25, 13-17 CCAA) will look to snap its season long four game losing skid and seven overall to Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, April 19.
