HAYWARD, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay head men's basketball coach
Gus Argenal has announced the addition of two standout student-athletes for the 2014-15 season. Yakima Valley College guard Juawnn Springfield (Fremont, Calif.) and De Anza College forward Jack Pasquini (Scotts Valley, Calif) have both signed national letters of intent to compete for the Pioneers next season.
Standing 6'2", Springfield starred at El Camino High School as a prep player. He averaged 18.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game as a senior, earning first-team All-League honors. As a junior, the East Bay native helped lead El Camino to the Sac Joaquin Section championship.
"Juawnn brings a scoring punch, coupled with great defensive anticipation," said Argenal. "He can handle the ball under pressure, makes great reads, and can score in a variety of ways. It is exciting to have the Fremont native coming home to play at Cal State East Bay."
As a junior college player, Springfield was a scoring machine at Yakima Valley. In 2013-14, he averaged 22.6 points and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 48 percent from the floor, 41 percent from three, and 72 percent at the free throw line. He was named MVP of the Lower Columbia Red Devil Classic tournament.
"Juawnn is a dynamic offensive player who can score in a variety of ways and poses significant match-up problems for the opponent," said Yakima Valley head coach Ray Funk. "We're looking forward to following the success he is sure to have at the next level."
The 6'8" Pasquini prepped at Scotts Valley High School, where he was a first team All-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League as a senior. He averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds per game and was voted as his school's Male Athlete of the Year.
"Jack is a unique basketball player with guard skills in a post body," Argenal commented. "He can rebound well on both ends, has quality post moves, and can also step away from the paint and stretch the floor with his shooting ability. We are thrilled to have him joining the Pioneer family."
Pasquini played two seasons of JC ball at De Anza College where he continued to excel on the glass. He averaged a double-double in 2013-14 while leading his team to a berth in the State championship tournament. Pasquini shot 51 percent on field goals, 39 percent on three-pointers, and 78 percent from the stripe, and he was named first-team All-Conference.
"Jack Pasquini is the epitome of a student-athlete and young man of high character," raved De Anza head coach Jason Damjanovic. "He's dedicated in the classroom and on the court and was a privilege to coach."
The pair joins a 2014-15 Pioneer recruiting class that already includes JC transfers Marquise Tolson and Marcus Norman, former Humboldt State guard Cody Kale, and De La Salle High School senior Patrick Marr.
