Box Score 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay suffered a series sweep after being shut out 1-0 and 7-0 by Cal State Monterey Bay during Saturday's doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. Otter pitchers Cori Reinhardt and Lindsey Clarkson each tossed complete game shutouts and held the Pioneers to just one run over the four game set.
East Bay starting pitcher Emily Perlich (1-8) again was on the short end of a pitcher's duel as she and Reinhardt (7-3) battled to a scoreless tie through six innings. Perlich stranded the bases loaded in the first inning, was the beneficiary of an inning ending double play in the second, and proceeded to hold Cal State Monterey Bay (15-4, 9-3 CCAA) hitless over the next four innings.
In the bottom of the seventh the Otters put the potential game-winning run on second base with two outs. Reinhardt trying to help her own cause and down 0-and-2 in the count worked a walk to extend the inning. Teammate Bianca Noriega provided a two-out walk off single scoring Reinhardt as she helped her pitcher pick up her seventh win of the season.
All 11 hits combined by both teams were singles in Saturday's opener. Perlich tossed 6.2 innings, giving up seven hits and four walks while striking out four Otters. Reinhardt scattered four singles, struck out three batters, and did not allow a runner to reach third base.
Clarkson (7-1) continued her dominance in the circle as she tossed a complete game shutout for the second straight day. She struck out eight batters and allowed just three singles in her seven innings.
Lauren Vestal was the star of the Pioneer offense over the weekend highlighted by her 3-for-3 effort in Saturday's finale. Over the weekend she went 6-for-11 (.545) and drove in the team's lone run with a solo home run in Friday's opener. The rest of the Cal State East Bay hitters combined to go just 4-for-75 (.053) with no extra base hits in the series.
Perlich tossed two complete games in the circle and allowed three runs (two earned) over 13 innings. She held the opposition to a .227 batting average and totaled a 1.08 ERA.
Cal State East Bay (6-14, 5-11 CCAA) will host Holy Names (7-16) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11, starting at 1 p.m.
