Offense Stalls in Friday Losses to Monterey Bay

3/7/2014 7:00:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay suffered a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road defeats on Friday dropping 2-1 and 8-0 decisions to Cal State Monterey Bay. Otter pitchers Cori Reinhardt and Lindsey Clarkson tossed a two-hitter and one-hitter respectively in holding the Pioneer offense to one run on the day.

East Bay starting pitcher Emily Perlich (1-7) and MB's Reinhardt (5-3) were locked in a pitcher's duel to open the weekend series. The Otters led 1-0 at the end of five innings after the Pioneers surrendered an unearned run in the second.

Reinhardt took a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Lauren Vestal ended the bid with a game-tying solo home run. Tied heading into the seventh teammate Jaynie MacDonald reached base courtesy of a leadoff single.

Reinhardt was able to preserve the tie score after a failed sacrifice attempt and strikeouts of the next two batters. The Otters responded as the leadoff batter walked on five pitches and later scored on a walk-off double from Trina Solario.

Perlich allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits over 6.1 innings. Over her past three starts she tossed complete games in each, posting a 2.79 ERA and striking out 13 batters.

Clarkson (6-1) was even more impressive in the circle for the home side as the only blemish during her bid for a perfect game was a Marisa Lerma third inning single. The Otter pitcher faced the minimum number of batters in the victory after teammate Nicole Pires threw out the Pioneer runner at second on a stolen base attempt.

Monterey Bay put up five first inning runs capped off by a Solario bases clearing double. Game one pitcher Cori Reinhardt, Madison Casto, and Solario combined to drive in all eight Otter runs as the game was stopped after five innings.

Kelsey Cairns (2-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) over 1.1 innings. Jordan Abel tossed 2.2 relief innings and held Monterey Bay (13-4, 7-3 CCAA) to one run during her time in the circle.

Cal State East Bay (6-12, 5-9 CCAA) will conclude its weekend series versus Cal State Monterey Bay with a Saturday doubleheader starting at Noon.
