Box Score ONTARIO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay fell 71-64 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament on Thursday evening. A 15-0 first half scoring run gave the Toros a double digit lead they would maintain until the final minute of regulation.
"We didn't play very well. We weren't able to execute our game plan defensively and I think that's what it came down to tonight," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "When you are giving up three's and not connecting on offense the pressure starts to build. We made a nice run late but ran out of time."
A
Tori Breshers basket gave Cal State East Bay (16-14) a 19-18 lead at the 8:01 mark of the first half. Following that score the Pioneers were held scoreless over the next five-plus minutes while Cal State Dominguez Hills built a sizeable lead.
The Toros knocked down 7-of-16 first half 3-point attempts capped off by a Taylor Champion triple in the waning seconds before halftime. Dominguez Hills (18-9) grabbed seven of its 22 first half rebounds on the offensive end and scored 10 second chance points in the frame.
Sharissa Estremera provided a much needed offensive spark off the bench knocking down both first half 3-point shots. She went 3-for-3 from distance in the game with her first basket ending the Toros lengthy scoring run. It also provided the only Pioneer points over the final eight minutes of the opening period.
CSUDH's Champion finished with 17 points highlighted by a 5-for-8 effort from distance. Breanna Garcia led all players with 18 points and was one of five Toros to finish with double digit points.
Stephanie Lopez led the Pioneers with 14 points and four assists. She became the first Pioneer in the CCAA era to dish out over 100 assists, finishing with 127 in her inaugural season with the Pioneers. Breshers was one board shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The team's season leading scorer
Brianna Terrance scored all 12 of her points in the second half. The First Team All-CCAA selection was held scoreless in the first half after not attempting a field goal in 17 minutes.
"I was being face guarded and believe I was the target of their defense," said Terrance. "I should have made myself available somewhere else on the floor."
An emotional Terrance following her final collegiate game elaborated on being with Coach Barcomb all four years of her Pioneer career. She was part of a program revival that included a 4-22 freshman campaign, to three straight CCAA Tournament appearances and becoming the first player in program history to earn All-CCAA First Team honors.
"I gained another family. I was able to play with a lot of people who had the same common goal. We improved every season…It didn't end how it should have ended, but it was great," said Terrance.
Cal State East Bay fought until the end closing the game out on a 9-2 scoring run. The Pioneers scored 42 second half points and outscored the Toros by nine over the final 20 minutes.
"I think that's our strength and what we are about," praised Barcomb of her team's never quit attitude. "It's the character of this team and I don't think there's anything wrong with saying you have a 'blue collar' mentality."
