Timely Hitting Propels Pioneers to Friday Road Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARSON, Calif. – Cal State East Bay extended its season long winning streak to five games following 8-5 and 6-2 road wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers never trailed while earning back-to-back victories against the Toros for the first time since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2010.

"These were great wins today. Our offense did a great job with runners in scoring position. Our pitchers executed the plan and our defense held it down," praised East Bay Head Coach Barbara Pierce.

Cal State East Bay hit .409 with runners in scoring position (9-for-22) on Friday while Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-22, 8-18 CCAA) connected at only a .188 clip (3-for-16). The Pioneers are 12-4 when scoring three runs or more, and 8-4 when the defense does not commit an error this season.

The Pioneers scored in each of the final five innings during an 8-5 game one victory. Jaynie MacDonald and Chelsie Kakela were responsible for driving in the team's first six runs while starting pitcher Emily Perlich cruised through the first five innings.

MacDonald finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and Kakela 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. The pair combined for five of the team's 11 hits and provided all three of East Bay's extra base hits in the game.

Perlich (5-10) was spotted a 6-0 lead and had a one-hitter going heading into the sixth inning. A two-run homer from Adriana Sanchez put the host Toros on the scoreboard before the Pioneer pitcher escaped without further damage in the frame.

East Bay once again pushed its advantage to six runs in the top of the seventh and the Toros were down to their final three outs. Dominguez Hills loaded the bases and got back-to-back run scoring singles from Madison Murphy and Veronica Vasquez.

CSUEB pitcher Kelsey Cairns was called upon in relief with the bases loaded, one out, and the tying run at the plate. Sanchez collected her team-high third RBI on a sacrifice fly, and Cairns retired the final two batters in order to preserve the win.

Perlich went 6.1 innings, surrendering five runs while striking out five batters. Cairns notched her first career save and showed a glimpse of what was to come in game two. CSUDH pitcher Jamie Duran (9-12) allowed eight runs (four earned) and struck out two in her complete game effort.

A Marisa Lerma first inning double and an Ali Cerminara fourth inning solo homer gave the Pioneers 1-0 and 2-1 leads respectively. The Toros responded with game-tying blasts of their own from Alexandra Mootry in the second and Madison Murphy in the fifth inning.

EB's MacDonald capped off her big day with the eventual game-winning home run to lead off the top of the sixth. It was the start of a four-run rally which featured an Alex Vela RBI single and two-run double from Kelsey LaVaute.

Cairns (4-5) put together her fourth consecutive solid outing after going 5.2 innings and surrendering the only two runs courtesy of solo homers. Teammate Jordan Abel entered with two runners on and two outs in the sixth after Cairns tossed 100 pitches. She preserved the lead and tossed a scoreless seventh to earn her first career save.

Cal State East Bay (13-17, 8-14 CCAA) will finish its weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28, starting at 11 a.m.
