3/2/2014 12:05:00 AM

Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay junior Nick Grieves scored a career-high 26 points and set a single-game school record by knocking down eight three-pointers in an 86-77 loss to Sonoma State on the final night of the 2013-14 regular season. The Pioneers finish the season 7-21 and 4-18 in CCAA play, while the Seawolves end up at 7-19 and 6-16 in conference action.

"I have been very lucky to have a team like this in my first season," said head coach Gus Argenal. "We talk daily about culture, character, and brotherhood, and our five seniors have left a lasting legacy of what a Pioneer basketball player should represent."

The Pioneers played a solid offensive game against the Seawolves (47.4 percent on field goals, 42.8 percent from three), and they held their own on the glass, grabbing nine of their 28 rebounds on the offensive end. However, it wasn't enough to overcome a Sonoma State team that was red-hot from the floor, hitting at 58.1 percent.

Grieves topped 20 points for the first time in his collegiate career and scored 37 for the weekend after posting 17 Friday night in San Francisco. He finished 9-for-18 from the field, including 8-for-15 from beyond the arc, against Sonoma. The Aptos native topped the previous single-game record of seven three-pointers, accomplished most recently by Danny Dinh in 2003. Grieves finished the season with a team-best 63 made triples and shot 41.4 percent from long range.

Jarred Jourdan added 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 19 minutes before fouling out. It was the junior's 11th double-digit scoring game of the season, and his eighth in the last 10 contests.

Mark Samuels scored 10 points on 4-for-6 from the field and dished out five assists in the final game of his distinguished East Bay career. The senior reached yet another milestone on Saturday night, becoming the third player in Pioneer history to score 1,300 career points.

Jacari Whitfield notched eight points and five assists in a team-high 35 minutes. The junior also hit a pair of three-pointers and will head into his senior season needing just two more to match the all-time Pioneer career record of 137.

Gabe Kindred scored eight points in his final collegiate game and finished the season as the team's leading scorer at 16.0 points per game. He hit four more free throws against SSU, bringing his single-season school record total to 154.

Ryan Hebebrand played his last game in an East Bay uniform and paced the squad with seven boards. It was the 15th time this season leading the team in rebounding for the Livermore native, who's fourth in the conference averaging 6.6 a game.

Kenneth Farr II scored two points in five minutes, and Donavon Jackson had an assist in 10 minutes as the pair finished off their four-year Pioneer careers.

Freshmen Kyle Frakes and Paramvir Singh each grabbed four rebounds off the bench for East Bay.

The Seawolves led 46-39 at halftime, and they continued their hot shooting after the break, eventually extending their lead to double digits. The Pioneers mounted a comeback in the final minutes, drawing to within two at 76-74 with two minutes left to play. However, SSU made all their free throws down the stretch and managed to hang on for the win.

"I want to thank my team for all their hard work," added Argenal, "and especially the seniors for their heart and belief all season."
