Cal State East Bay (4-8, 3-5 CCAA) enters the weekend after suffering a four-game sweep to nationally ranked No. 13 and currently first place in league UC San Diego. The Pioneers will face a Sonoma State (8-6, 2-6 CCAA) squad that dropped three of four games on the road to Cal State San Bernardino last weekend.
CSUEB's offense is currently paced by the bats of senior
Chelsie Kakela and sophomore
Lauren Vestal. Kakela current ranks fifth in the CCAA with her .441 batting average and brings a five game hitting streak into the series. Vestal is hitting .405 on the season and leads the team with five doubles on the year. Both Kakela and Vestal lead the team with 12 RBI apiece driving in over 40 percent of the team's runs this season.
Starting pitchers Emily Perlich and
Kelsey Cairns have enjoyed Hayward combining for a 2-0 record and a sub-three ERA. They will look to rebound against a Sonoma State squad that currently ranks eighth in the CCAA in team batting average at .289.
SSU's Megan Konieczka ranks third among qualified league players with her .455 batting average. She leads the Seawolves in singles, doubles, triples, homers, RBI, and stolen bases. Entering her senior season she had no more than 20 RBI in a single year and already has 17 through just 14 games.
Amanda Llerena is arguably the ace of the staff having started eight of the team's 14 games this season. She has posted a 5-4 record, 1.82 ERA, and struck out 41 batters in 50 innings. Llerena is coming off a freshman season in which she went 14-8 and amassed 145 strikeouts in 143 innings pitched.
Melissa Smith and Katy Bihl have split time as a starter. The two have combined for three wins, a 3.73 ERA, and 26 strikeouts in 45 innings thrown.
Sonoma State has dominated the series since Cal State East Bay joined the CCAA. SSU has won 14-of-16 league contests and all eight meetings on Pioneer Field. East Bay snapped a 12-game losing skid to the Seawolves after winning both of Friday's games during last year's series in Rohnert Park.
