AUSTIN, Texas -- Cal State East Bay junior
Linda Brown captured the individual crown at the 2014 Saint Edward's Invitational, leading the field with a two-round total of 147 (+5). The Pioneers finished in seventh place as a team, posting a combined score 643 (+75). They shaved five strokes off their first-round total to finish Tuesday's action at 319 (+35) at the par-71 Grey Rock Golf Club.
Brown shot an even-par 71 in Tuesday's second round, which was the lowest score in the field of 72 golfers. For the tournament, she finished three strokes ahead of Nova Southeastern's Katrina Wong and Hawaii-Hilo's Nyssa Aoki, who tied for second at 150 (+8).
It's the third tournament victory of Brown's collegiate career. The San Leandro native has now been East Bay's top finisher in three straight events dating back to October.
"Linda has been leading the team with outstanding performances going all the way back to Hawaii in the fall," said head coach
Alan Sue. "She has worked hard and played well in practice, so a championship doesn't surprise me at all. Her coaches and teammates are extremely proud of her."Â
Brown added, "I hit the ball extremely well today, and I felt like I couldn't miss any putts."
Sophomore
Melissa Hosman shot her second consecutive 82 (+11) on Tuesday to finish at 164 (+22) and in a tie for 33rd place overall.Â
Senior
Andrea Castellanos finished third on the team with a two-day total of 166 (+24) after firing the second-lowest round on the squad with a 79 (+8) today. JuniorÂ
Arielle Swan-Smith carded an 87 (+16) on day two, also finishing the tournament at 166 (+24). The pair was tied for 40th place.
Senior
Ysabel Cabreira took 89th place with a total score of 183 (+41) after turning in a 92 (+21) in the second round.
Next up the East Bay women will be their home tournament, the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, this weekend, Mar. 1 and 2, at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif. The Pioneers are the defending champions of that event.Â
