Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay played inspired ball during Saturday's "Senior Night" in hopes of sending
Brianna Terrance and
Rachel Finnegan out with a victory in their final game inside Pioneer Gymnasium. It will be a night to remember for the senior duo as the Pioneers outlasted Chico State 63-60 in a down to the wire finish.
"We were running on fumes, but we kept fighting and stayed together as a team. We played this entire weekend for our seniors," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "We wanted to honor them and I think it gave us such an emotional lift to push us through the end for an incredibly important win."
Terrance was honored again during a timeout late in the second half after scoring her 1,000th career point for the Pioneers. She became the third player in program history to join the club alongside Antoinette Goode and Leah Thornton.
"It is very fitting that Bri scored her 1,000 career point tonight on her home floor. It was a key basket to give us a cushion down the stretch," praised Barcomb. Her final two points came with 1:12 left in the second half to put the Pioneers ahead 58-53.
Cal State East Bay never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 12 points. Chico State (17-7, 13-7 CCAA) cut the deficit to 25-24 late in the period, but a Terrance 3-pointer and
Danielle Peacon bucket to close out the half put the Pioneers up six at the break.
CSUEB led throughout most of the second half and enjoyed a 60-53 lead with less than a minute left in regulation. The Pioneers nerve would be tested at the free throw line as Chico State was forced to foul and hope for misses at the charity stripe.
East Bay went 1-for-6 at the line as the Wildcats clawed back to trail 61-60 with 12 seconds left and possession to the Pioneers.
Tori Breshers was fouled and knocked down a pair of arguably the most important free throws of her collegiate career.
Chico State's Jazmine Miller 3-point heave was well long, Breshers grabbed the rebound, and East Bay ran out the clock for the victory.
"Tonight's game left me exhausted, so I can't imagine how they found enough energy to get one last stop," praised Barcomb of her team's defensive effort.
Terrance led all players with 22 points highlighted by a flawless 3-for-3 effort from distance. Breshers finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots. She was the main contributor to the team's season-high eight blocks on Saturday.
Peacon poured in 14 points to go along with five boards, two assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Micah Walker finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Finnegan grabbed a team-high nine rebounds including four on the offensive end.
Jazmine Miller led the Wildcats with 15 points. Chico State was nearly perfect at the free throw line sinking 15-of-16 attempts on the night. East Bay went 19-for-33 and just 11-for-21 in the second half.
Tonight's victory coupled with other California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) results moved East Bay into sole possession of sixth place with two regular season contests remaining. The top six teams in the CCAA advance to the post-season tournament and the Pioneers are now in a position to control their own destiny by winning out.
"We can only focus on us. Nothing else in league matters but what we are trying to accomplish," stated Barcomb.
Standing in East Bay's path to the CCAA Tournament is San Francisco State (14-12, 10-10 CCAA) on Friday, Feb. 28, and Sonoma State (4-20, 3-17 CCAA) on Saturday, March 1.
