Box Score 2 LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay dropped 17-1 and 8-3 decisions on the road to nationally ranked No. 13 UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers scored in their opening team at-bat to take the lead in both games, but the Tritons offense put up 25 runs on the day and 41 over the four-game series.
A leadoff homer for Jaynie MacDonald opened the day and what was a promising starting after she took the second pitch offering over the center field wall. However it was one of only five Pioneer hits in the game as MacDonald and Ali Cerminara both went 2-for-2 at the plate.
UC San Diego (12-2, 7-1 CCAA) responded in the bottom half of the inning with Emma Schneider's two-out bases clearing double giving the home side a 3-1 lead. It was the first three of 17 unanswered runs scored for the Tritons.
Schneider, McKenna Clewett, and Kirsten Willmon each collected four RBI in the game and combined to go 7-for-10 and score seven runs in the victory. Alexis Edwards (6-0) remains unbeaten on the season after allowing just the leadoff homer to score over four innings.
Cal State East Bay took the lead in the opening inning of both Saturday games courtesy of home runs. In game two the Pioneers put together back-to-back two-out hits with
Chelsie Kakela's third homer of the season giving them a 2-0 lead. Kakela drove in all three CSUEB runs on the day after finishing the series with a sixth inning RBI-double.
Again UCSD responded with three runs in the first stemming from a pair of two-out run scoring base hits. Clewett tied the game with a two-run double, and Katie Saunders brought her home to give the home squad a 3-2 lead after one inning. Saunders would later drive in two more with a fifth inning home run that put the Tritons ahead 6-2.
Lauren Vestal and Kakela combined to go 4-for-6 (.667) at the plate and score all three Pioneer runs. The rest of the team combined to go just 1-for-20 (.050).
East Bay pitcher
Kelsey Cairns (1-3) tossed a complete game allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks. UCSD hurler Alayna Brenman earned the victory giving up three runs on five hits over six innings.
Cal State East Bay (4-8, 3-5 CCAA) will play a non-conference road doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 26, against the Academy of Art (1-5).
