Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Senior
Brianna Terrance scored 23 second half points in lifting Cal State East Bay past Cal State Stanislaus 92-78 inside Pioneer Gymnasium on Friday night. The Pioneers moved into a three-way tie for sixth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings and the final post-season tournament spot with three games remaining.
"We showed life tonight. We played for each other, especially our seniors," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "We've been faced with so much adversity this year and tonight we pushed through our mistakes to come away with a big win."
Both East Bay seniors played a significant role in Friday's result with Terrance's second half effort leading the way. After being held to just two first half points, she connected on 9-of-15 shots, including 4-of-5 from distance, and added eight rebounds over the final 20 minutes. Terrance collected her first career double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
"Bri came to life in the second half for a tremendous double-double. We were a force on the boards tonight…It was a total team effort," praised Barcomb.
The Pioneers enjoyed a 41-23 advantage on the glass including 18 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second chance points. In the second half alone Cal State East Bay shot nearly 58 percent from the field including 6-for-8 (.750) from three.
Terrance led a group of five Pioneers to score in double figures.
Stephanie Lopez had an efficient 21 points highlighted by a 5-for-7 shooting night and 10-for-12 effort at the free throw line.
"Stephanie handled the pressure all night long. She was calm, made smart decisions and stepped up big for us from the free throw line," commended Coach Barcomb.
Danielle Peacon had her most impactful night since returning from an injury contributing 15 points and six rebounds before fouling out of the game.
Tori Breshers was one board shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, to go along with four helpers.
Micah Walker finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Contributions came from nearly every player that saw floor time tonight including senior
Rachel Finnegan. While the shooters were hot she distributed a season-high seven assists and led the team with three steals. Junior
Sharissa Estremera made a clutch 3-point basket to push the Pioneers ahead for good near the midway point of the second half.
In the first half it was Warriors (13-10, 10-9 CCAA) guard Lauren Godde who helped the visiting side keep pace with the Pioneers. She scored 14 of her team-high 25 points in the first half as Stanislaus trailed by a slim 37-35 at the half.
However the senior committed a costly technical foul after a personal foul away from the play that sent the Pioneers to the free throw line four times with a five-point cushion. Cal State East Bay took advantage going 4-for-4 in that stint, and 19-for-24 in the second half, pushing the lead to 69-60.
Brianna Cotton took over in the second half as she scored 15 of her 17 points over the final 20 minutes. She made back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Warriors within 69-66 near the six minute mark. Despite going 5-for-8 from downtown in the second half, Cal State Stanislaus never pulled any closer than three over the final five minutes of regulation.
Cal State East Bay went on a 13-1 run capped off by a Terrance corner 3-pointer that fired up the Pioneer bench and crowd. She finished the night with 978 career points, needing just 22 in her final career home game to become the third Pioneer to join the 1,000 point club.
Cal State East Bay (13-13, 10-9 CCAA) will host Chico State (17-6, 13-6 CCAA) on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 5:30 p.m. It will be CSUEB's final home game and the team will honor seniors Terrance and Finnegan during pre-game ceremonies.
