BELMONT, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball will hit the road Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur. The Pioneers are coming off a weekend in which they won the 'Battle of the Bay' series by taking three out of four games from San Francisco State.
Chelsie Kakela and
Lauren Vestal are coming off big weekend in which each went 7-for-12 at the plate. Kakela finished with three extra base hits including a pair homers, and drove in eight runs. Five of Vestal's seven hits were doubles and she finished with a team-high 10 RBI over the weekend.
As a squad the Pioneers hit .390 (41-for-105) with 16 extra base hits.
Meli Sanchez went 6-for-13 and Kelsey LaVaute 5-for-11 including a towering home run in her Pioneer Field debut on Friday.
Jordan Abel,
Kelsey Cairns, and Emily Perlich each picked up a win in the circle over the weekend. The Pioneer pitching staff posted a 2.80 earned run average and struck out 13 batters in 25 innings thrown.
Notre Dame de Namur (4-5) won four straight to open the Montana State Billings Desert Stinger event from Feb. 7-8. The Argos ended the tournament with a loss to Fort Lewis College, and were swept by California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member Sonoma State on Feb. 12.
Breanna Young leads the regular starters with her .429 batting average, four home runs, and 11 RBI. The rest of the team is hitting .200 with one home run and 17 RBI.
Jenna Bassler and Shelby Reali have each started four games in the circle for NDNU. Bassler (2-1) leads the team with her 2.35 ERA and has struck out 24 batters in 23 innings tossed. As a staff the Argonauts are holding the opposition to a .274 batting average.
Cal State East Bay (3-2) is 6-3 against Notre Dame de Namur dating back to the 2010 season. Last season the two teams split a doubleheader in Hayward.
