East Bay wasted no time getting its offense going as Chelsie Kakela blasted her first pitch offering clear over the right-center field wall to plate the first two runs at Pioneer Field this season. A five-run second inning capped off by Kelsey LaVaute's three-run homer put CSUEB ahead 8-0 and on the clear path to victory.

Emily Perlich (1-1) picked up her first win with the Pioneers scattering four singles over four innings while allowing just one unearned run. Jordan Abel tossed a perfect fifth inning to seal the victory as East Bay run-ruled San Francisco State.

Lauren Vestal collected a pair of run scoring doubles with her fourth inning two-run extra base hit giving the home side a lead that would eventually end the game in the fifth. The 4-5-6 hitting trio of Kakela, LaVaute, and Vestal combined to finish game one 5-for-7 and drive in all eight of the team's RBI.

San Francisco State's Chelsea Brent brought in the team's lone run with a third inning sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Emily Gibson was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on five hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.

A two-out second inning single from Brent gave the visiting Gators their first lead of the series in game two. It was one of 10 SFSU hits which also included a Selina Rodriguez game-tying RBI single in the fourth.

Cal State East Bay's defense shined throughout Friday's action highlighted by the outfield efforts in the third inning from Meli Sanchez and Mandy Dale. Sanchez held the leadoff batter to a single as the ball rolled near the left field foul pole. On the ensuing play Dale's outstretched diving catch towards the infield held the runner at first base helping the cause of starting pitcher Kelsey Cairns (1-1).

Cairns held SFSU to just two runs over 4.1 innings and exited the game in the fifth with a 3-2 lead and a runner on second base. Perlich came on in relief stranding the runner to keep Cairns in line for her first win of the season.

Tied 2-2 in the fourth Kakela singled to load the bases for LaVaute with two outs. LaVaute worked the count full and drew the walk that would give back the lead to the Pioneers. Cassie Vela would add insurance in the fifth with her first home run of the season and the team's third of the day.

SFSU's Kelsey Murakami brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh after leading off the frame with her second hit of the game. However Perlich slammed the door shut collecting the next three outs in order to pick up her first save of the season.

Sanchez led the Pioneer offense with three hits. Jaynie MacDonald, Kakela, LaVaute, Marisa Lerma, and Dale collected the others.

SFSU pitcher Megan Clark (2-2) went the distance giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out two batters. She recorded the only two strikeouts of Pioneer batters on the day. Courtney Gravel went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Gators.

Cal State East Bay (2-2, 2-0 CCAA) will host San Francisco State (4-5, 0-2 CCAA) on Saturday, Feb. 15, to close out the 'Battle of the Bay' series.
