HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball will make its home debut during its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener on Friday, Feb. 14, against San Francisco State. The Pioneers and Gators will tangle for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at Pioneer Softball Field.
Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State (4-3) have split the 14 games between them since CSUEB joined the CCAA for the 2010 season. The Pioneers have had the upper hand as of late winning six of the past eight meetings.
East Bay (0-2) is coming off a non-conference doubleheader against CCAA squad Cal State Stanislaus. The Pioneers' two doubleheaders against non-league foes were rained out forcing them to schedule an impromptu date to get games in before official league play begins this weekend.
Emily Perlich and
Kelsey Cairns earned the starting nods in the circle on Wednesday. Perlich struck out six and gave up four earned runs over 4.1 innings in her Pioneer debut. Cairns went the distance surrendering six runs (two earned) while striking out three Warriors.
Jaynie MacDonald reached base safely in 5-of-7 plate appearances courtesy of two doubles and three walks. The Pioneers hit .250 as a team in game two led by MacDonald's two hits.
Chelsie Kakela, Kelsey LaVaute, Marisa Lerma,
Meli Sanchez, and
Sara Pacioni each provided a base hit.
SFSU boasts two pitchers with sub-two ERA's in Emily Gibson (2-1, 1.11 ERA) and Megan Clark (2-1, 1.75 ERA). Opponents are hitting just .224 with three extra base hits in 173 at bats against this pair.
Jennifer Lewis leads the regular starting Gators with her .368 average and four runs batted in this season. As a team this season SFSU is hitting .320 with runners in scoring position (16-for-50) but just .176 with two outs (9-for-51).
Three of the team's four wins this season have come in shutout fashion, including a pair of 1-0 wins. The Gators have been shutout themselves twice this season and enter this weekend's action following a doubleheader split with Academy of Art.
