Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – The much anticipated and prolonged season debut of Cal State East Bay softball ended in 6-1 and 6-2 defeats to Cal State Stanislaus on Wednesday night. The Pioneers were part of history as the contests were the first night games played at Warrior Field.
Cal State Stanislaus (3-4) pitcher Natalie Rendon was able to hold Cal State East Bay to a single run despite walking six batters in her complete game effort.
Shaunna Purkey walked to lead off the third inning and a two-out single from Ali Cerminara broke up the shutout and potential no-hit bid for Rendon.
Cal State East Bay's Emily Perlich earned the opening day start and lasted 4.1 innings in her Pioneer debut. Perlich gave up six runs (four earned) and issued five walks while striking out six batters. The Warriors took advantage of five free passes, four Pioneer errors, and two wild pitches. Olivia Aragon made her collegiate debut and tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The bottom of the Warriors lineup supplied most of the offense as the 6-7-8 hitters of Brittney Rickels, Brianna Nicholson, and Natalie Winters went 6-for-11 with three RBI and scored four runs. Nicholson collected her first homer of the season, and both of Rickels hits went for extra bases.
Cal State East Bay battled Cal State Stanislaus to a scoreless tie through the first three innings of game two. The host Warriors tacked on two runs in each of the final three frames as the Pioneer defense marred any chance of victory.
East Bay committed one error in each of the Stanislaus scoring innings as the home side continued to add to their lead. The CSUEB offense came to life as six different Pioneers notched a base hit, led by a pair from newcomer Jaynie MacDonald.
Sara Pacioni and MacDonald drove in the East Bay runs courtesy of RBI doubles.
Sophomore pitcher
Kelsey Cairns battled through some control issues going the distance despite walking eight batters. She allowed six runs (two earned) and struck out three while throwing 178 pitches.
Rickles batted leadoff for the Warriors and finished 2-for-5 with three RBI in game two. Rickles and Nicholson finished the day with four hits apiece in the sweep.
Cal State East Bay (0-2) will host San Francisco State (4-3) on Friday, Feb. 14, to open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
