Pacific Tigers Topple Pioneers in Midweek Matchup

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team was defeated 80-51 by University of the Pacific in front of a crowd of just over 1,700 at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Wednesday night. The Tigers (5-3) are the fourth Division I opponent the Pioneers (2-3) have taken on this season, following exhibitions at Cal, San Jose State, and Santa Clara.

Junior Jack Pasquini and freshman Patrick Marr led the team with 10 points each. Pacific's Alec Kobre was a perfect 5-for-5 on three-pointers and 8-for-8 at the free throw line for a game-high 23 points in just 24 minutes.

East Bay shot 33.3 percent from the field as a team and went 6-for-24 from long distance. The squad was out-rebounded by Pacific 44 to 22, and they attempted just 18 free throws, compared to 41 for the Tigers.

The Pioneers were able to keep the score close for most of the first half despite facing a size disadvantage. They struggled to find the shooting touch, but their defense held the Tigers to just six field goals and a 28.6 percent mark from the floor in the opening frame. Even after making a run before halftime, the home team led by just 11 points at the break.

Pacific managed to pull away late in the game as they rode Kobre's hot shooting and forced the Pioneers into foul trouble. East Bay improved offensively in the second half, hitting at 39.1 percent from the field and making 8-of-10 from the foul line, but it wasn't enough to sustain a comeback as they grabbed just one offensive rebound after halftime.

"Pacific played a solid game for 40 minutes on the glass, and they executed on offense," said head coach Gus Argenal. "In the first half, we played one of our best halves of basketball in terms of defense and rebounding, but we couldn't sustain that for 40 minutes."

Pasquini was 4-for-10 from the field and pulled in a team-high six rebounds for East Bay. Fellow big man Ryan Okwudibonye finished with eight points on 4-for-7 shooting, all coming in the first half.

Marr, meanwhile, did all of his damage in the second half. He reached double figures for the second time this season in just 14 minutes off the bench. The De La Salle product went 3-for-5 from the floor and knocked a pair of three-pointers to go along with three rebounds and three steals.

Jacari Whitfield dished out a team-best five assists. Fellow senior guard Cody Kale notched seven points and three assists in his first action of 2014-15. The transfer from Humboldt State played 19 minutes in his Pioneer debut and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

"This was a great test for our team, and we had several bright spots," added Argenal. "We want to play the best possible competition. Tonight is only going to better prepare us for tough games this Friday and Saturday."

CSUEB opens its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule this weekend by hosting Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego on back-to-back nights. Tip-offs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 6 following the women's games, with live video available at PioneerWebTV.com.
