Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team fell on the road to Dominican University Saturday night by a final score of 71-62 to close out the 2014 Penguin Preseason Conference Challenge.

One night after the Pioneers (1-1) and their opponents both shot over 50 percent, neither squad reached 40 percent in this game. East Bay finished at .340 from the field, .267 from long distance, and .583 from the free throw line. The Pioneers committed just eight turnovers, but they were punished on the glass as Dominican out-rebounded them 50 to 25 and grabbed 16 offensive boards.

"When you have a rebounding margin like we did tonight, it's almost impossible to win," said head coach Gus Argenal. "My hat goes off to Dominican and their effort tonight. They out-played us on both ends of the floor."

Nick Grieves led the team in scoring for the second straight night with 16 points before fouling out. The senior knocked down four of his eight three-point attempts and pulled in three rebounds. After the game, Grieves was named to the All-Tournament team. He finished the weekend with 17.5 points per game and shot 54.5 percent from long range.

Freshman Patrick Marr had the hot hand early, notching 13 first-half points. He finished with 15, going 2-for-2 from long range and 5-for-6 at the foul line.

Junior Jack Pasquini led the Pioneers in rebounding for the second night in a row, tallying eight bards along with five points. Ryan Okwudibonye and Juawnn Springfield each finished with six points, and senior Jacari Whitfield dished out a team-high six assists.

Despite the disadvantage on the glass, the Pioneers held a lead for much of the first half. Marr banked home a runner on the baseline to tie the score at 19-19 with nine minutes to play before halftime, and then he buried a three-pointer the next time down the court to give East Bay the lead. They shot 43.2 percent in the opening frame and led the rest of the way until a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jonny Bates gave Dominican a 32-31 edge at the break.

The Penguins went on an early run before the first media timeout of the second half to stretch their lead to 11, and they managed to hold off the Pioneers from there. East Bay got into foul trouble and made just seven of their 27 second-half field goal attempts.

CSUEB now has a week off before their next game, another road tilt against a local opponent. The Pioneers visit Menlo College on Saturday, Nov. 22 for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
