CHICO, Calif. -- Sophomore
Adam Stone claimed the individual championship at the 2014 InterWest Wildcat Classic, hosted by Chico State at the par-72 Butte Creek Country Club. Stone fired a 66 (-6) in Tuesday's final round to finish the week at 206 (-10) and earn his first career tournament victory.
As a team, the Pioneers placed fifth out of 15 schools in their first tournament of the 2014-15 season. They shot a collective score of 293 (+5) in the final round -- the third-lowest total of any team -- to jump two places in the standings and finish at 901 (+37).
Chico State won its home tournament with a three-round score of 865 (+1), led by runner-up individual Alistair Docherty, who was three strokes behind Stone at 209 (-7). Dixie State took second place at 875 (+11), followed by Sonoma State (+18) in third and Montana State Billings (+31) in fourth. The Pioneers finished ahead of 10 squads, including local rivals Academy of Art (+41) and Dominican (+42) and CCAA opponents Cal State San Bernardino (+43) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (+61).
Stone's third-round 66 was the lowest score by any player in the tournament. He entered the final round trailing Docherty by one stroke and vaulted himself to victory by going four strokes lower on Tuesday than any player on the course. The pair were the only two golfers to shoot under par all three rounds.
Stone led the field by a wide margin with 18 total birdies. The left-hander was four under par on par-four holes and six under par on par-fives. At one point, he birdied seven out of eight holes. Down the stretch, Stone led by just one stroke with two holes to play, but he closed with two straight birdies to get the win.
"It was a great effort by the team to move up the leaderboard after a poor first round, and Adam carried us this week with his incredible play,"
said head coach Alan Sue. Fellow England native
Sam Lavelle finished tied for 23rd individually after a solid 74 (+2) in the final round. It was the lowest 18-hole score of the week for the senior, whose total was 227 (+11).
