Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay men's soccer played its fourth straight overtime game to open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday inside Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers and Cal State Monterey Bay would remain out in the Hayward heat for the full 110 minutes as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
"It's a tough conference. Every game is a battle. We are competing well and just need to 'turn the corner'," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "The team is working hard and playing for each other. We are improving and building off each of our league matches."
Cal State Monterey Bay (2-4-3, 1-2-1 CCAA) took the lead in the 58th minute as Duce Bell's jumping header from close range and center goal redirected the cross from teammate Nick Stanley. It was Bell's team-high third goal of the season.
Due to the extreme heat, a water break stoppage was called by the officiating crew allowing the players to rehydrate in the 70th minute. It did not cool off the Cal State East Bay (3-4-3, 0-2-2 CCAA) offense as the equalizer came within 30 seconds after resuming play.
Christian Gonzalez settled the ball near the top of the Otters 18-yard box. A short pass to teammate
Javier Martin set up his left footed strike which was initially saved. The rebound rolled out to
Duke Driggs who snuck it past a pair of Otters for his first goal of the season.
Driggs nearly forced an own goal from Monterey Bay near the 80-minute mark as Otters defender Jovani Delacruz and goalkeeper Evan Drake collided for a high service while defending the tall striker. From 10 yards out the ball arched into the crossbar and was cleared out of danger by the CSUMB defense.
Drake and East Bay goalkeeper
Adrian Topete would each finish with four saves in the match. Topete made two of his most crucial stops in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Cal State East Bay controlled a scoreless first half of play with advantages of 11-3 in shots taken and 6-0 in corner kicks. However the Pioneers were not able to put a shot on target until the 60th minute of play.
Cal State East Bay will begin its 4-match road trip on Friday, Oct. 10, against nationally ranked No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona (9-0-1, 4-0-0 CCAA).
