Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer earned its first point in league play this season following Friday's 2-2 tie with Sonoma State inside Pioneer Stadium.
Adrian Maldonado and
Chris Lara each scored to give the Pioneers their first league point against the Seawolves since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2009.
"I am pleased with the majority of our performance and the progress we are making. As a team, we stepped up and played well tonight," commended East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo of his team's effort. "We are disappointed in not getting three points, but we showed our depth on the bench and were effective on both sides of the ball."
Cal State East Bay was playing from behind as Sonoma State (6-3-1, 1-1-1 CCAA) scored within the opening minute of play. Chris Pihl put one past the Pioneer defense only 52 seconds after the opening whistle, set up by teammate Zanin Mahic.
Cal State East Bay (3-4-2, 0-2-1 CCAA) responded with the equalizer in the ninth minute.
Javier Martin's cross near the left corner of the 18-yard box found
Adrian Maldonado at the penalty kick spot. Maldonado's initial header was saved, but the senior followed through with a jumping flick above the outstretched keeper to tie the match.
Tied 1-1 in the early stages of the second half, the Pioneers took advantage of a misplayed ball by the Seawolf defense deep in their territory.
Christian Gonzalez gained possession and provided a clever back pass to
Chris Lara inside the left half of the 18-yard box. Lara evaded a defender and fired on target near side from about 10 yards out for the go-ahead goal.
The lead would last less than 10 minutes as Sonoma State poured on the pressure after falling behind. The Seawolves fired off three shots from point blank range with the final one from Michel Arroyo. It was determined to be an own goal by the officiating crew as SSU pulled even in the 63rd minute.
The game headed to overtime and Cal State East Bay turned up the pressure, outshooting Sonoma State 6-2 overall and putting three shots on target in the second overtime period. Gonzalez,
Javier Martin, and
Conley Perry each forced one of six saves from SSU goalkeeper Sean Taufer in the final 10 minutes of play.
"We were focusing on putting together a strong second half, and then an aggressive overtime. We did that but could have done a better job on our restarts and holding our lead," said Cumbo of his squad's extra time performance.
Adrian Topete made two saves on Friday and now has 22 on the season. It was the third straight overtime game for the Pioneers as he allowed two goals in 110 minutes of action.
Cal State East Bay will host Cal State Monterey Bay (2-4-2, 1-2-0 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 11:30 a.m. The Otters also earned their first points in league play this season following a 2-1 win over San Francisco State.
