Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. – Sophomore
Corryn Barney's first goal of the season put the visiting Pioneers out front early in Sunday's league road tilt against UC San Diego. However the host Tritons erased their deficit only 37 seconds later and went on to score five unanswered goals over the ensuing 45 minutes in a 5-1 result.
"Corryn found a ball in front of goal and was able to put it away for the score. It was a good start, but immediately after we allowed UC San Diego to find their rhythm on the attack," said East Bay Head Coach
Amy Gerace. "We didn't do a good job playing with urgency in our defensive third and it cost us."
Barney's first collegiate goal came courtesy of a cross served from the right side off the foot of teammate
Sara Yamasaki. It was Yamasaki's career best third assist of the season as the senior nears the end of her four years as a Pioneer.
UC San Diego had managed to score only five goals total over its previous five matches heading into Sunday's meeting with Cal State East Bay (5-6-2, 2-4-0 CCAA). The Tritons exploded for three goals within a 9-minute stretch in the first half to swiftly take a 3-1 halftime lead.
Five different players scored for UC San Diego (5-5-2, 2-3-1 CCAA) starting with Kiera Bocchino's equalizer in the 12th minute. Teammates Izzy Pozurama and Kylie Hill add scores of their own in the 19th and 21st minutes respectively.
Despite scoring more than two-thirds of their goals after halftime in 2014, the Pioneers were held scoreless on Sunday and have managed only one post first half score over the past four games. The Tritons returned to their scoring ways within the opening minutes out of intermission.
Kristen Sampietro made it 4-1 in the 47th minute, and teammate Katie O'Laughlin capped the scoring at the 55:12 mark. It is the first match Cal State East Bay conceded five or more goals in nearly two full calendar years.
Bocchino and Hill led the Tritons with three points each, scoring once and assisting on another. UCSD goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky made five saves in the victory.
CSUEB goaltender
Selena Braun made three saves in the loss. Teammate
Lia Unterholzner was a late substitute and appeared in her second match of the season. Unterholzner made her first save as a Pioneer in the 82nd minute.
Cal State East Bay fell from fifth to ninth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. However the Pioneers sit only one game behind the fifth place position in a tightly contested conference through six matches.
The Pioneers will remain on the road next weekend with matches against Chico State (Oct. 17) and No. 25 Cal State San Bernardino (Oct. 19).
