Cal State East Bay at UC San Diego – Friday, Jan. 10
Cal State East Bay ended a seven-game losing streak to UC San Diego in the final meeting between the two squads a year ago. The Pioneers 59-44 victory over the Tritons was the first since joining the CCAA during the 2009-10 campaign.
East Bay junior
Danielle Peacon enters the weekend coming off back-to-back double-double performances in league play and was name the CCAA Player of the Week. Fellow Pioneer newcomer
Stephanie Lopez dished out 11 assists in Friday's 83-58 win over current nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona in posting her own double-double.
Miranda Seto leads UC San Diego averaging 15 points per game, including a 19-point performance in the team's most recent victory over Chico State. She is one of three Tritons to average double figures in conference play including teammates Megan Perry (13.3 ppg) and Erin Dautremont (12.0 ppg).
"(UC San Diego) has talented guards. They play with speed, court vision and the ability to light it up from behind the arc," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "Add in multidimensional post play and a well-coached program, and you have a team that will be prepared and execute at a high level."
Â
Both of these teams are unbeaten against CCAA squads with a losing record in conference play. The Pioneers are 3-0 against sub-.500 teams and 2-1 versus league schools with winning league records. All four of the Tritons wins this season have come against sub-.500 teams in league play.
Cal State East Bay at Cal State San Bernardino – Saturday, Jan. 11
Cal State San Bernardino is looking for its first CCAA win following a pair of close losses this past weekend to Chico State (Jan. 3) and Cal State Stanislaus (Jan. 4). All three of the Coyotes' home games this season have ended in losses by eight points or less.
"The (Coussoulis Arena) is a tough place to earn a win. That team has been playing at a higher level as of late," said Coach Barcomb. "You can tell they are getting adjusted to their new system and are playing with more intensity and focus."
The Pioneers have eked out the past three meetings by margins of six, three, and three points respectively. East Bay earned its first road win over San Bernardino in CCAA play 42-39 back on Feb. 23, 2013.
Alexia Mack and Tayllor Gipson lead the Coyotes offense as both average 12.8 points per game. Trinidee Trice has played in the team's three most recent games and scored in double figures twice.
San Bernardino's 11th ranked (out of 12) scoring offense in the CCAA is averaging just shy of 58 points per game. It will be a tough test facing East Bay's top scoring defense allowing just 52.2 points per in six conference games.
"All road trips in the CCAA present unique challenges and this one is no different. I hope that our time on the road at the CCA Tip-off Classic and PacWest/CCAA Challenge will pay dividends," stated Barcomb. "We have to take care of ourselves and focus on us, staying present in the moment."
