Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team hit 50 percent of its three-pointers on Saturday night en route to an 89-81 win over visiting Humboldt State (5-6, 0-6 CCAA). The Pioneers even up their record at 6-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The team also improves its home record to 5-2 prior to a four-game road trip starting next week.
East Bay was led by a pair of seniors in
Gabe Kindred, who scored 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting, and
Mark Samuels, who notched 17 points and eight assists.Â
As a team, they shot 51.9 percent from the field, their best mark of the season against Division II competition. East Bay was particularly effective from long range, knocking down 10-of-20 three-pointers. They were out-rebounded by the Jacks, 35 to 29, but they held Humboldt to just four fast break points. The Pioneers also scored 23 points off turnovers, compared to just seven for HSU.
"I have a great amound of respect for coach Kinder and his team," said head coach
Gus Argenal. "They play hard and compete every night. Our squad brought a high amount of energy and passion tonight, which gave us an edge. It was a great bounce-back performance for us."
Senior
Ryan Hebebrand turned in a solid effort on both ends of the floor, posting 12 points on 5-for-6 from the floor and grabbing eight rebounds -- five of them on the offensive end -- and three steals. The Livermore native has had at least eight boards in five of the past six games.Â
Junior
Nick Grieves also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points in the victory. He knocked down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, rebounding nicely after a tough shooting night on Friday. Grieves has now made a three in all 12 games of his Pioneer career.
Jacari Whitfield notched eight points (3-6 FG), and
Jarred Jourdan added six in 13 minutes off the bench. Freshman
Kyle Frakes also had a big impact for the Pioneers, putting up six points and five rebounds in 17 minutes. Fellow first-year Pioneer
Aaron Cameron also got on the scoresheet, converting a three-point play to put East Bay up by 11 midway through the second half.
The Pioneers led nearly the entire first half -- from when Samuels hit a three-pointer 12 seconds into the game to when HSU tied it at 31-31 with three minues left before halftime. The jacks briefly took the lead, but Grieves knocked down a triple to put CSUEB back on top and Kindred scored in transition at the end of the half to give the Pioneers a 40-37 advantage at the break.
It was tight for a while after halftime, but eventually East Bay started to pull away. They exhibited impressive intensity, continuing to find ways to score and prevent Humboldt from making a run. After Cameron put the Pioneers up double digits for the first time, they never led by less than seven the rest of the way. The team was 16-for-22 at the free throw line in the second half as they closed out the much-needed victory.
The Jacks shot 48.3 percent in the game, and most of their scoring came from guard Allen Guei (29 points, 10 rebounds, 10-16 FG) and forward David Howard (28 points, 9-23 FG).
East Bay hits the road next weekend for two tough games on the team's first Southern California trip. They'll visit UC San Diego on Friday followed by Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
