Pioneers Power Past Pomona into First Place Tie

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay opened the new year with a resounding 83-58 over the only conference unbeaten squad Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night inside Pioneer Gymnasium. Double-doubles from Danielle Peacon and Stephanie Lopez paced the Pioneers to victory and into a four-way tie for the top spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.

Peacon's 21 points led all players and a group including four teammates whom scored in double figures. The Pioneers enjoyed a 29-10 points in the paint advantage in large part to her 11 rebounds and 9-for-14 shooting performance from the field.

"We had several solid performances tonight highlighted by Danielle's all-around effort," said winning head coach Suzy Barcomb. "When you can have a one-two punch from your post and power forward it is always a welcomed sight."
 
East Bay newcomer Stephanie Lopez finished with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists. She is the first Pioneer to dish out 10-plus dimes in a single game during the Barcomb era.

"Stephanie had such great vision of the floor tonight. She had some amazing passes and we had an incredibly great night shooting the ball," said Barcomb in regards to the team's 31-for-55 (.564) shooting effort.
 
It was at most a two-possession game throughout the first half as Cal State East Bay took a modest 41-35 lead into halftime. Despite featuring the CCAA's top two scoring defenses, neither team struggled offensively over the opening 20 minutes.
 
The Pioneer defense rebounded nicely holding the Broncos to just 23 second half points and a season-low 58 points in regulation. Ashley Lovett came off the bench to lead Cal Poly Pomona (7-2, 4-1 CCAA) with 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Brianna Terrance extended her double-digit scoring streak to 11 games following her 17-point performance on Friday night. Micah Walker converted 9-of-14 free throws and finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Tori Breshers played an efficient 14 minutes knocking down 4-of-5 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws for 11 points.
 
Cal State East Bay (7-5, 4-1 CCAA) will host Humboldt State (5-4, 2-3 CCAA) on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 5:30 p.m.
