HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay will host a pair of weekend California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contests inside Pioneer Gymnasium. The Pioneers will face Sonoma State (2-12, 1-9 CCAA) on Friday, Jan. 24, and San Francisco State (9-7, 5-5 CCAA) on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Cal State East Bay (10-7, 7-3 CCAA) had not allowed a league opponent to score 60-plus points over the first seven contests of the CCAA season. The CCAA's top scoring defense has allowed the opposition to score 61 or more points in each of the past three contests, having suffered defeats in two.
"We are happy to be at home for the next two games and we need to play East Bay basketball in order to be able to compete the way we need to," said Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "Both teams will present different challenges for us. We have not been able to put together a complete game in quite some time."
Cal State East Bay vs. Sonoma State (Friday, Jan. 24 – 5:30 p.m.)
Cal State East Bay is 4-1 at home this season and Sonoma State is looking for its first road victory (0-6) of the year. The Seawolves have lost their road games by an average margin of 18.2 points per game, and will enter Friday's game on a six-game losing streak overall.
SSU has had eight different players in its starting lineup with senior Kristina Fahey the lone Seawolf to start all 14 games. She is one of four regulars to average more than eight points per game on a balanced offensive squad.
Bronte Sheahan (10.1 ppg), Hannah Sourek (9.8 ppg) and Tanner Adams (8.1 ppg) are the primary scorers the Pioneer defense will be looking to stop. Sourek had scored in double figures in eight straight games before being held to a total of eight points this past weekend. Adams scored just 41 total points in her first eight games this season, but has put up 48 over her past three contests including 22 points against Cal Poly Pomona back on Jan. 11.
"Sonoma State has multiple scoring threats and been putting up some big numbers in the offensive columns as of late," praised Barcomb of Friday's opponent. The Seawolves have knocked down 11 3-pointers in two of the past four games and currently rank fifth in CCAA play with 64 made triples in 10 league contests.
The past six contests between these two squads have alternated winners. The Pioneers won the most recent meeting 57-44 on Feb. 1, 2013. Sonoma State made just six 2-point baskets while knocking down 8-of-19 from downtown. East Bay forced 26 Seawolf turnovers and did not allow any SSU player to score more than 10 points.
Cal State East Bay vs. San Francisco State (Saturday, Jan. 25 – 5:30 p.m.)
San Francisco State has lost four of its past five games and is just 2-6 on the road this season (7-1 at home). The Gators have fallen in their past three road games with losses to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal Poly Pomona, and Humboldt State.
"(SFSU) will present a different type of challenge for us," said Barcomb. "SFSU has a great three-player scoring threat…they also defend and rebound very well."
Senior Katie Batlin leads the Gators in scoring (14.4 ppg), rebounding (8.0 rpg), and assists (3.8 apg). Angela Van Sickel has (13.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg) has knocked down 33 3-pointers this season, more than double any player on the East Bay roster. Lauren Varney (11.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg) rounds out the scoring trio and has posted three double-doubles this season.
"We have our work cut out for us this weekend. We need to re-energize while at home so we can end the first round of CCAA play on a good note and with momentum into the second round," said coach Barcomb.
Cal State East Bay has won four straight versus San Francisco State after sweeping the season series each of the past two seasons. The Pioneers earned a 59-44 home win on Feb. 2, 2013, in the teams' most recent matchup.
