HAYWARD, Calif. – A scoreless regulation forced overtime in Sunday's men's soccer conference matchup between Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino. Coyotes senior Raul Gomez ended the scoring drought at the 93:10 mark to keep CSUSB unbeaten on the year.
Gomez received a long pass in front of a congested Pioneers goal. His strike from the right post within 10 yards of goal found the far side netting for the game-winner.
Cal State East Bay (0-4-0, 0-2-0 CCAA) out shot Cal State San Bernardino (4-0-2, 2-0-0 CCAA) 18-12 in the game and 8-7 in shots on goal. Rey Suarez nearly opened the scoring for the home side. His free kick from 20 yards away glanced off the crossbar in the 54th minute.
Three minutes later teammate Kellen Crow's header forced a diving save from Coyotes goalkeeper Roberto Gonzalez. Both he and teammate Jeff Salt made four saves each in combining for the shutout.
"Our effort today was great," said East Bay Head Coach Andy Cumbo. "We generated a lot of scoring chances…Give credit to their goalkeepers on making good saves."
East Bay goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer made six saves including a close range save to preserve the shutout in regulation. A Pioneers turnover in the backfield allowed Roberto Mariscal to fire a shot from 10 yards on goal around the hour mark.
"Losing in overtime is always tough, but we are gaining valuable experience early on in the season," said Cumbo. The Pioneers have been on the short end of one-goal margins in each of their first four matches this season.
Cal State East Bay will be on the road Friday, Sept. 20, against Humboldt State (2-1-1, 0-1-1 CCAA).
