Strong Final Round Lifts Pioneers to 7th Place at Sonoma State Invite

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team made a push up the standing during the final two rounds this week, ultimately taking seventh at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational at the Foxtail Golf Club North Course. The Pioneers were in ninth out of 11 teams after a first-round 337, but they followed that up with rounds of 327 and 328 to finish at 992 (+128) for the tournament. 

East Bay finished third out of four CCAA teams at the event. They were four strokes ahead of Chico State, 21 strokes behind the hosts Sonoma State and 18 strokes behind No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay.

Andrea Castellanos posted 82 and 78 in the last two rounds on the par-72 course. The junior had a total score of 246 (+30), tying her for 25th in the overall field. Castellanos was the only Pioneer to break 80 this week with her final-round 78.

The golfer she tied for 25th place was freshman teammate Melissa Hosman, who finished with the same total score of 246 (+30). Hosman went 81-82-83 in the three rounds, giving the Pioneers the most consistent play on the team.

Sophomore Linda Brown improved upon her first round 86 with an 80 in the second round followed by an 83 in the third. Her overall score of 249 (+33) tied her for 28th in the field of 63 golfers.

The fourth qualifying team score came from senior Katie Devine, who shot 84-83-85 in the three rounds for a total score of 252 (+36). Devine placed in the middle of the pack, tied for 36th overall.

Sophomore Arielle Swan-Smith improved her score each round, turning in an 87, then an 85, and then an 84. Her total of 256 (+40) put her 43rd in the individual field

Juniors Erica Ballard and Ysabel Cabreira both competed unattached for this Pioneers this week. Ballard followed her 83 on Monday with rounds of 87 and 89 to finish at 259 (+43) for the tournament. Cabreira posted 86-88-89, giving her a total of 263 (+47). 

This was the final tournament on the Pioneers' schedule before the NCAA Division II Super Regional tournament, which will take place May 5-7.
