Tournament of Champions Ends for Pioneers Following Setback to Dominican

Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. — The Pioneer women's softball team lost to Dominican University, 7-1, in the Platinum Bracket opening round game to conclude play at the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions on Sunday.

East Bay (12-26) totaled five hits in the game. Sara Holdridge, who hit .450 for the tournament, was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in the Pioneers' lone run. Taryn Thomas had a pair of hits in four at bats. In the six games in Turlock, Thomas hit for a .428 batting average.

The Penguins got off to a fast start with three runs in the top of the first against Pioneer starter Andi Anderson, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Samantha Talavera.

East Bay mounted a scoring threat with two runners on base in the bottom of the first, but couldn't get on the scoreboard.

Kayleigh Klingberg laced a two-run single as the Penguins added three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Domincan then added another run in the top of the fourth inning.

After being shutout for five innings, the Pioneers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Nicole Adair reached on an error, and Meli Sanchez followed with a walk. Holdridge, who drove in four runs against Dominican on Saturday night, singled to score Adair. 

The Pioneers will return home to resume CCAA play next weekend. The team will face Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series beginning on April 12.
