Pioneers Drop Three Games on First Day at Tournament of Champions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TURLOCK, Calif. – The Pioneer women's softball lost three games in the opening day of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus, on Friday. In a tripleheader against all PacWest opponents, Cal State East Bay fell to No. 21 Grand Canyon, then Hawaii Hilo, and finally Chaminade.

Game 1 -- #21 Grand Canyon 8, CSUEB 0 (5 Inn.)

East Bay opened tournament play on Friday with an 8-0 defeat to the No. 21 Lopes, dropping the team to 11-22 on the season. Grand Canyon, which opened tournament play earlier in the morning with an 11-inning, 4-3 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills, improved to 28-11 overall.

Lopes hurler Kailey Regester improved to 6-3, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out eight and walking six. Regester helped her own cause at the plate with three hits and two RBI. Leading hitter Kayla Henry also had three hits, while Claire Zampini drove in three runs.

After the Pioneers stranded four runners in the first two innings, Grand Canyon broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third. Zampini singled home Haley Walker with the first run, while Regester had a two-run base hit.

Grand Canyon put the game away with five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Henry had an infield hit to drive in a run and Zampini provided the big blow of the inning with a two-run single.

East Bay had a final chance to score in the top of the fifth inning. Lauren Vestal walked to open the inning. After two outs, Pioneer leading hitter Taryn Thomas singled to break up Regester's no-hitter, but Regester got the final out to preserve the shutout.

Game 2 – Hawaii-Hilo 5, CSUEB 0

The Pioneers played Hawaii-Hilo in the second game on Friday, falling to the Vulcans 5-0, despite receiving their best pitching performance of the day. East Bay (11-23) lost to Hawaii-Hilo for the third time this season, as the Vulcans improved to 29-14 on the season.

Pioneer freshman pitcher Kelsey Cairns (2-1) tossed her third complete game in as many starts, allowing three earned runs, nine hits, and three walks, with one strikeout. Thomas was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Sara Holdridge and Nicole Adair each had a hit for the Pioneers.

After Kairns retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Vulcans opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second. Hawaii-Hilo then increased its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the top of the third inning. Emily Greene had a sacrifice fly, and then Brandi Wilson singled to drive in the second run.

The Pioneers had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Adair opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Thomas bunt hit. However, Nelson retired the next three Pioneer hitters to end the scoring threat.

Arren Nunez singled home Colleen Aubrey to give the Vulcans a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth. East Bay had a final opportunity to score in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Thomas singled to center field. Holdridge followed with a hit to put runners on first and second, but the rally ended on a fly ball out.

Game 3 – Chaminade 10, CSUEB 2 (5 Inn.)

The Pioneers finally got runs on the board in their nightcap under the lights, but they nonetheless concluded Friday's play with a 10-2 setback to Chaminade University. Following the defeat, the Pioneers stand at 11-24 for the season, while Chaminade improves to 20-14 overall.

Thomas led a seven-hit attack for the Pioneers, going 2-for-3 with a run scored to finish with a team-high five hits on the day. Chelsie Kakela drove in a pair runs for East Bay..

The Silverswords scored early with a run in the first and added two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead against CSUEB starter Andi Anderson. East Bay cut the deficit to 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third. Thomas led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a base hit by Meli Sanchez. With two outs, Kakela got the bog hit, doubling to right center to score Thomas and Sanchez.

Rayna Strom-Okimoto had a bases-clearing triple as the Silverswords answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Chaminade then secured the victory with three runs in the top of the fifth.

The Pioneers will continue pool play on Saturday with two more games against the PacWest. They'll take on Cal Baptist at 2:30 p.m. followed by Dominican University at 8:00 p.m. Visit the Tournament Homepage to follow all the action.
