Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. –- The Pioneer women's softball team held a 3-0 lead over Cal State Stanislaus going to the bottom of the seventh in their first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, but the Warriors stunned the Pioneers by scoring four runs to walk off with the 4-3 victory. Cal State Stanislaus completed the doubleheader sweep and took the four-game series with a 5-1 win in the second game.
Following the doubleheader setback, the Pioneers are 9-23 in CCAA play and 14-32 overall. Cal State Stanislaus is now tied with the Pioneers for ninth place in the CCAA. The Warriors are 16-32 for the season.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first game with a run in the top of the third.
Taryn Thomas singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and came home on a
Meli Sanchez base hit. East Bay ended up loading the bases, but was unable to increase its lead.
Pitcher
Lauren Zweigle was zoned in, retiring nine of the first 10 Warrior hitters. The Pioneers had a chance to extend their margin, but stranded two runners on base in the top of the fifth.
East Bay broke through for two runs in the top of the seventh, however.
Nicole Adair led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Sara Holdridge followed with her team-leading 23rd RBI, scoring Adair. Pinch-runner
Allison Noble then crossed home plate on a Warrior error.
Zweigle held the Warriors scoreless through six innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. The Warriors scored their first run on a Pioneer error and tied the game on a pair of RBI singles by Brittney Rickles and Brittani Weatherford. Sarah Locarnini followed with a base hit to left center, plating Kiley Mendez with the winning run.
East Bay had nine hits in the game. Adair was 2 for 2 with a run scored. Holdridge and
Lauren Vestal each collected two hits. Zweigle (10-16) allowed four runs (three earned) walked three, and struck out three in 6.1 innings.
In the second game, the Warriors pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Pioneers tied the game with a run in the top of the third. Adair reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. Holdridge followed with a single to drive in Adair.
Weatherford scored on a Pioneer failed pickoff attempt as the Warriors took a 2-1 lead after five innings. The Warriors then broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Amy Droege and Rickles each notched RBI singles.
East Bay had one last chance to score, but stranded two runners on base in the top of the seventh.
Freshman hurler
Kelsey Cairns (2-5) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
The Pioneers will return home on April 23 to face Notre Dame de Namur in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. East Bay will then conclude the regular season with a four-game series at San Francisco State beginning on April 26.
